Using a layer cake (10" squares) called Terrain by Kate Spain for Moda, I am going to finally make a twister quilt. I have seen several of Joanne's & finally decided to try one. Wish me luck. It is suppose to be fun and easy. I've already laid the layer cake out on the bed & ready to start piecing. The inner border will be white with purple polka dots. I will wait until more coordinating bolts come in before choosing an outer border. The technique is to first sew the squares together and add the border. Next, I will cut again on an angle lining up with the points with the cross lines on the special twister ruler. When I sew the blocks back together, they will form the pinwheels. Hmmm. We shall we. Should look scrappy and fun. I love the fabric!! It is so very soft and silky smooth to the touch.
Oct 02: Had to get started. Couldn't resist. Oct 03: Phase 1: Sewed the 10" squares together and added the border. Oct 05: Phase 2: Cut the pinwheels. Oct 06: Sewed the first two rows. It's coming together. Oct 08: Finished sewing the blocks into rows and connected the rows in pairs. Oct 10: Main top finished. Need border fabric. Dec 16: Got in fabric for borders and backing. It is all pieced now too. Ready to load and quilt. What a difference with the vibrant purple! Dec 17: Started loading. I went back and forth between periwinkle thread and white thread on the back. I knew I wanted white on the front. I finally opted for white top and back & glad I did. The thread is so fine it is barely visible plus the border matches the backing completely now. Yes! Dec18: Quilted Dec 25: Sold to Joanne, my daughter & owner of Ye Olde Forest Sep 2013: Joan Taylor bought this quilt from Joanne for a gift to her sister & did the binding.

Bought some homespun fabrics that are so soft. Like flannel soft. All I plan to do is add borders & quilt. One is green and the other red. I see this quilt as being a nice extra layer when my fall quilt isn't warm enough. I also see me snuggling up in this one while watching TV when I am not binding another quilt. Kelley has plenty of this fabric on his discount rack so if any one else is interested, now is the time to say so.
Oct 24: Made two tops this evening. I will definitely get more of this fabric and make throws. Oct 28: Quilted using Gerry Wheaton's No Evil Monkeys. I have loved them since I first discovered his website many months ago looking for dragons. Nov 30: Bound & finished. With fabrics named like these made into a Hunter's Star quilt, how can one go wrong?
I am making this for someone I have known now for eighteen years without whom my life would not be the same. Jun 2010: I picked up these fabrics last June (2010) to make this quilt much like my Blue Hunter's Star quilt, This time I am using a different template so the stars will be smaller. I learned my lesson that there needs to be a distinct light-dark flow to the fabrics for things to pop. The Rock Candy intended for the backing will serve this purpose nicely - I hope!! A suitable backing should not be hard to find when the time comes. I will use Dream Puff batting to make it extra light weight & extra warm. Just need to decide on a low density IQ pattern to quilt it. Oh! And find the time!!! Aug 25, 2011: Cut the 60 blocks thus they are ready to sew. Aug 26: Piecing today. The angle seams are giving me a run for my money. Dogged determination comes in handy! HA! Finally figured out a way to get my seams exactly like I want them! Aug 28: Half blocks are done. Aug 29: Block are done but need trimming Aug 31: Blocks are trimmed...twice. Quilt will be slightly smaller (56.5" x 83.5") than planned (58" x 86"). Blocks are stacked in 2's and I begin sewing them into a quilt top tomorrow. Sept 01: Connecting the blocks today. Making progress but not finished yet. There will be ten rows of six blocks each. Almost through with forming the 10 rows. Sept 02: Got the rows together. Joined two pairs of rows. Have 9 more seams like this matching 13 points on each. All I need is time & lots of it. Sept 03: Have pairs of rows sewn. Sept 05: Finished joining the rows and added borders thus the quilt top is finished. Planning a trip to Greensboro on the 10th and will pick out a fabric for the backing while there. Meanwhile, I need to come up with an idea for the quilting design. Hmmm. Piecing Sept 09: Got the backing fabric. Several customer quilts need to be longarmed before I can get back to this one or any of mine. Sept 19: Pieced the backing. Sept 28: Made a quick sample star to test the IQ pattern. When I couldn't envision how the quilting pattern I am considering would look, I did a quick sample. This is the fastest, make no effort to do it right, piecing I have ever done. Not bad, huh? Sept. 29: I woke up with a sneaking suspicion that I did not have binding for this. I did not see it when cleaning up around here. Sure enough, I sent my extra fabric to Joan!! Now she is sending back enough for the binding. And so it goes. Sept 30: Hmmm. Some things just aren't meant to happen. Joan's package got rejected so it didn't go out yesterday. Going out today means I won't receive it until Monday. I'll just ship it when it is finished as originally planned. Oct 01: Quilted at last!! And squared. Oct 03: Binding is attached. Oct 04: Hand binding. Oct 05: Finished. Quilting & Binding
I pieced this quilt top for the shop last June 2010. Kelley quilted it using Swirls 2 by Vicki Malaski of DesignsByVicki & it has been on display in the shop ever since. Last weekend Joanne gave it to me to bind & sell. I will use Navy Moda Bella Solid. This quilt design was featured in Quilts and More Magazine Summer 2010 using the same Bali Pop (2.5" strips).
Jun 2010: Pieced Jul 23: Back for binding & selling Aug: Prepared the binding Nov 16: Attaching the binding Nov 19: Bound Dec 25: Gave back to Joanne Making another quilt from the Fat Quarters Cut-up book. It is a Crazy 4 You but with varied cuts so there are two sets of block shapes instead of just one. These quilts are made by stacking 14 fat quarters alternating light and dark fabrics, cutting them into 9" squares and them making 2 off center X cuts through each stack, one from side to side and one from top to bottom. This makes 4 stacks from each square. The top left stack is left as is; on the top right stack the top fabric is moved to the bottom; on the lower right stack move two to the bottom & on the bottom left stack move three. Piece the blocks as they now sit. Rotate and arrange the 56 blocks into in 8 rows of 7 blocks each. I hope these beautiful holiday theme fabrics will be all the more interesting this way! The best part about this quilt is that there are no points to match until the last step of connecting the rows. Fun to make but deciding how to arrange the blocks can take someone like me a long time with lots of trial and error!!Aug 02: Cut fat quarters into four 9" squares
Aug 03: Cut the stacks and start piecing them back together Aug 07: Finish the 56 blocks and trim to 8" squares Aug 08: Layout planned and rows done Aug 17: Took the rows apart back down to blocks & rearranged them. I just did not like what I had before. Aug 22: Been planning the layout for several days. Main top is back together again! Aug 23: Added inner border. Waiting for black print fabric for outer border. Aug 25: Border fabric here. Quilt top finished. Aug 26: IQ pattern will be Sandy's Hex Curves on Point to match the snowflakes. Sep 19: Prepared the backing. Nov 04: Quilted. Nov 15: Bound. Dec 25: Sold to Joanne. Today I am pulling another quilt off the Soon page and out of the closet. It is an Irish Chain quilt my daughter gave me compete with backing to finish and sell. I have toyed with designs for it before but never settled on anything.
This is going to require creating clipped blocks. Ask and you shall receive! I did not know about this feature but asked the dear woman who sold me my IQ if there was a way to do it. YES! About halfway through quilting this, I realized this it Red Rooster fabric. I bought some of the dark red and green that coordinate with it and used them in my Log Cabin Table Topper. HA! Wish I had more than I do of that red for binding. July 16: After several days of working out the design & then redoing it this morning using the clipped blocks feature, I am finally quilting. Half way by end of evening. July 17: Quilting done! Now I need to find some binding. July 24: Got the binding. Aug 25: Attached the binding to the front so ready for hand binding to the back. Sep 13: Bound Nov 16: A friend is giving this to his wife for Christmas!! This quilt project has been on my Soon page a long time, in fact, the whole time my site has been up. I purchased it in August 2010. A dear friend, Pamela, is someone whose art certainly "sends me". Furthermore, she is a dear friend. We have not met in person YET but have shared so much for a year and a half now on the phone and on RedBubble. I have been quietly waiting for her to indicate which quilt will send her to the moon! She has now declared; "I am in love with the cardinals! It just reminds me of the area here, my cardinals in the yard and the pines behind the house! Yup! I love it!" and so it is hers. I will start working on it along with everything else I have going. I love her excitement for this is indeed a beautiful set of fabrics. Top will be made from one Woodland Holiday layer cake by Moda of 42 10" squares. June 27: Cut the into 6.5 inch squares and 3.5x10 & 6.5x3.5 inch rectangles. June 28: Spent the day working on the layout. I put down paper towels and built the blocks on them so I can turn them, gather them up to sew or clear the bed for sleep. First I laid out the pieces with like shapes turned the same way so I could get as close to a dark, medium and light fabric in each block as possible. Next I turned the blocks to create a more.random look. Finally I swapped like fabrics until I liked what I saw. Several hours later, I came back and rearranged them some more. June 29: The blocks are assembled but need trimming. After that they will be sewn into rows and then the rows sewn together. June 30: The center of the top is done. Just needs borders now. July 01: The top is finished! July 02: I will use Dream Puff batting, Red & Green King Tut thread. The IQ pattern is posted below. The quilt is loaded and basted. July 04: Quilted. July 05: Binding is attached and doing the hand stitching now. July 06: Quilt is finished! Photograph taken by Pamela Phelps July 12, 2011 Robin had several samples of her art work printed on fabric to see how it would do. Since we have them, I figure we may as well use them! At my daughter's suggestion, I am thinking of making them into a bell pull. Feedback welcome! Robin has decided on using four of them. Her images on RedBubble Dragonflies Butterfly Design Peacock Design Yaffle - The Green Woodpecker are far more dynamic than the fabric samples. Perhaps she needs to paint directly on the fabric. I have also heard that inkjet printing has better results. When Robin and I started talking about quilts using her art, she offered to give or paint me whatever I chose. It turned out to be "Shanti Niketan"--her vision of me being the true spirit of my cabin. Before Framing. The letters are hammered wrought iron slightly nailed into the wood and stand out 2 inches. A local framer helped me select this one with a hammered look too. So far, I think I have come out the winner in the exchange!! BUT stay tuned! I received a call from "Kul" recently wanting to send me a sample of fabric that is perfect for dyeing or painting. I have the sample but since I am not an artist in that sense of the word, I put him in touch with RB and Robin in particular. I suspect great things are yet to happen with the vibrancy of Robin's beautiful creations. June 18: Quilt top finished June 19: Proposed two IQ designs & Robin has made all her selections. When the longarm is ready for use again, this will be the next one quilted. June 21: My machine is ready & I have loaded quilt. Will longarm in the morning when not so tired!! June 24: Finally got this little quilt longarmed but it beat me to no end. So simple yet proved to be so hard to get and keep the design aligned on the fabric. Squared and ready for binding. June 30: Finished! Sorry that final photos are so poor. Bought two Nature's Notebook by Moda Honey Buns (40 1.5" strips) a year ago plus borders and backing. Since I've lost my directions for finishing my sling handbags & I need backing to finish two other projects & the plaids aren't here yet, I decided to pull out this quick and easy project from the back closet. I plan to do a simple rail fence. I've already laid out the strips so now it is just sew, sew, sew.
June 16: Top Finished July 10: Quilted, Oops! I sent Joan the fabric I needed to make binding!! July 21: Got my binding fabric back today! LOL Aug 25: Attached the binding so it is ready for hand binding to the back. Oct 31: Finished binding. I have some friends who are, well were, determined to buy a local business on the Blue Ridge Parkway to be called The Teddy Bear Restaurant and Inn. When they succeed (they didn't), I will be making quilts for all their guest beds. The center of the quilts will be this bear. Even though things have not panned out, John still wants one of the quilts for himself. Since May 31, I have been playing around with the idea of using Scottish tartans in various layouts. I found an online site, The Scottish Weaver, that had 100% cotton tartans and began arranging them in EQ7. Swatches are below. The vendor is in nearby Charlotte. When the guys bought the idea of tartans, I called. The Scottish Weaver is a division of Great Scot International. With a delightful Scottish brogue, Peter Wilson took my first order of 100% cotton twill tartans on June 01. I ordered 8 tartans with enough yardage to complete at least two queen sized quilts. They are the first eight listed above, June 13: The first set of tartans are here!! June 16: After spending several days working on quilt top patterns that went from bad to worse, the guys finally came over today to see the fabrics. When we actually spread them out on the bed, it was immediately obvious that the tartans looked best left pretty much alone. Sam did decide be wanted a Stewart Royal (red) border around the Rosie Bear block & around the quilt. Otherwise, he wanted MacLeod of Harris (green) for the rest. Second option is with the fabrics reversed. Stunning effect! Oh yes! He also picked out a bear paws pantograph and variegated red and black #1003 GLOWING EMBERS King Tut thread for quilting. The backing will be a solid red with bright red bobbins. June 22: Did the quilt top layout. June 23: First order of red & green solids for backing are here. The colors are perfect. The thread is ordered. June 24: The rest of the red and some navy solids are here. Now that we have the main quilts planned, I started playing with the classic Bear Paw quilt blocks in conjunction with tartans and Rosie Bear. These are the layouts I have come up with so far. It is fun just playing with this software. June 26: The cutting of the first quilt has begun with the center creme & and the red. Since the fabric is 54-55 inches wide, the size the guys want perfectly fits the fabric and there will be absolutely no waste. The top and bottom sections of the green are 27" high and the smaller sides are 26" high. Can't have a better unplanned fit than that!! June 30: The thread is here and gorgeous! It is thicker than I usually use so the quilting patterns--Rosie and the bear paws--will really stand out. July 01: The fabric for one quilt is now cut & pieced except for red border. Oct 18: Pieced, ironed & loaded the backing
Oct 19: Started ironing the top amidst numerous interruptions all day long Oct 20: Finished ironing and loaded the top. Quilted 3 rows and Rosie. Oct 21: Quilted! Oct 24: Sandy agreed to do the hand binding. Nov 06: I finally attached the binding. Nov 18: Passed it to Sandy to finish Dec 13: Finished & delivered back to me. Dec 15: John picked it up Joan and I did some fabric swap. I sent her my leftovers from the Vintage Butterflies quilt & she sent me a Noah's Ark panel and backing to make a quilt for a friend's son soon to be born. I'll use some of the backing fabric to add 3" side borders only to the front and then bind it with the tan fabric. Thanks so much, Joan!! TJ (dad) & Tony (granddad) & Marie (great-grandma) will love it! So do I !! Now for a bit of humor...
Bought a beautiful panel of Japanese textured fabric last October at a show. Will cut and attach the borders today. The fabric is far more beautiful than the camera is showing. April 12: The quilt top is complete. April 13: Bought the Japanese Bloom pantograph June 12: Bought the backing when I went to my grandson's high school graduation. June 29: Quilted. Ready for binding. July 19: Binding is done. Quilt is finished. I gave this quilt to a neighbor and friend, Duane Trivette. I had no plans when I made it but knew it was Duane's when the thought to give him a quilt came to mind. I gave this small pink rail fence quilt I made in April 2010 to Duane's wife, Marie Trivette, way back when. This is one of the first quilt I made just for fun and then gave away.
I knew I wanted to use the Vintage Butterflies in a quilt the moment I saw thefabric. Joanne worked her magic & put it together for me. I will make this as quickly as possible for display as a shop sample until I get a buyer! This will be my 4th project using the pattern "Just Can't Cut It" by All Washed Up. It is a great pattern when one wants to feature a particular fabric. The blocks are large & simple with only a few points to match, so the piecing is a snap--just what beginners need & what quilt shops sell!
I looked and looked for a wheat pattern but alas, none would do. I asked Sandy! She came up with a simple wheat design that can be used in a variety of ways. I love it! Size 76x88 03/20/2011: Pieced 03/24/2011: Quilted March - July on display at Ye Olde Forest quilt shop July 23: I am bringing this quilt home tomorrow & will start on the binding. 08/15/2011: Binding is done. My daughter eventually bought this quilt as a permanent shop sample. Spring Fever-a Quilt Top Too Beautiful to Leave Behind!I couldn't resist this beautiful quilt top pieced by Joanne, my daughter & owner of Ye Olde Forest Quilt Shoppe. When she said she was going to sell it, I just couldn't see it getting away so I bought it before any one else could. She has given me so many tops, It was time I compensated her up front for beautiful work in both selecting fabrics and piecing them.
I have friends who LOVE butterflies and perhaps one of them will love this as much as I do. My daughter loves it too, as do I, so only time will tell where it ends up. The pattern, "Just can't cut it", is perfect when a main fabric needs showing off. I have used it myself a couple of times. April 23: Marie Trivette, a dear friend and mother of Tony, is considering this quilt. May 18: Marie has decided to purchase this quilt with modifications. She took the top home to measure what size border she wants me to add to make it fit her queen bed. June 03: Marie wants me to use the backing I already have to add a 12" border Next time I go down to the shop (for my grandson's graduation) I will pick out a new backing. June 12: Have the backing but not quite enough June 19: Have the last 1/2 yard of backing June 25: Pieced the backing. Loaded & basted. June 26: Quilted, squared and ready to bind. July 10: Finished. Over the weekend, I was inspired to try out some beautiful block designs I purchased last May 2010. When I saw Joan's quilt, she & I began discussing longarm pattern options. Suited for block designs, we started playing. Joan selected the patterns and the layout from two Donna Kleinke sets: Dogwood Beauty & Forget-Me-Knot. I stitched a miniature sample of her quilt layout. I not only had lots of fun but gained valuable experience. I also found a couple of errors that could have had a disastrous effect. This time it merely snapped the needle off & I was able to stop the machine before any damage was done. Below you can see how the patterns are connected to built the whole stitching pattern. These are pictures of the sample being stitched. I am stitching the block outlines on this sample. Those would not be done on a real quilt. Feb 08: I tried a sample of King Tut cotton thread. It is thicker than the Bottom Line polyester thread I usually use. It should show off a design more & has great potential for whole cloth & detail work. My experiment was quite successful I think!
John Garland found a dragon pantograph that stirred his heart. I had sent him to look for an embroidery design but the longarm design got his attention first. I remembered a small quilt top I made as a shoppe sample way back in the beginning (2008) and used as a small table cover. Someone special (that would be Sandy) really liked this one so I bought the fabrics to finish it. She has now graciously conceded to John to perhaps use on his small kitchen table. I am thinking a large dragon in the center as a block. I will fill in the rest of the longarming with a smaller dragon panto. The fabrics are from the Joshiko II line.
03/25: Oops! When ironing in preparation for loading, I noticed the center square was no where near going to lie flat for quilting. Trick: Secure the fabric, spray with starch, steam, let dry. In the fourth picture below, I had already starched, steamed and dried. I then steamed again and used a hair dryer and finally an iron to get the the fifth picture. 03/29 Quilted. 04/06 Bound. I made this log cabin table topper eons ago. Found it stuffed away when looking to see if I had any acceptable inner border fabric for Crazy 4 You. The pieced section stops with the darkest red. I have since added borders as illustrated below. This is square, not cross shaped, but I do like the effect of this image! Mar 22: Looked through my stash to find enough fabric for a backing Apr 10: I am piecing the back from fabric from my stash. I have never pieced a backing like this before and may still end up with two quilts instead of one. We shall see!! I also have plenty of coordinating fabric to make some nice place mats. A fun project to work on in my spare time of which I have little!! Apr 11:After much deliberation, I have decided these need to be separate stand alone quilts. Apr 13: Prepared the backing from fabric on hand. There is just barely enough for both quilts. Oh yes! Apr 17: Have the block layout now for the log cabin quilt. And it is quilted! Jun 04: Finished binding on Log Cabin SQUARE OFF IS SOLD Apr 14: Quilted the 2nd one I am calling Square Off.
Jun 05: Finished binding on Square Off July 21: John Cook bought Square Off & I bought my third car from him.Thank you, John on both counts. A quilt for Holly Paino--an amazing artist & friend--in HUGE appreciation |
Feb 11: Piecing has begun! On the first of the triangles, the seams didn't nest like they need to so I had to rip (ever so gently) some partial seams to remedy that. Done. Feb 12: On the second set of triangles, I got one set of logs on the wrong side of the chimney triangle. I caught the error as I started the second row of logs, ripped the necessary seams and will sew them correctly tomorrow. The good news is I am confident I will make less goofs as I go along. I know now that I can do this quilt. All I need is time and patience. It is pretty darn kool in every aspect. We do have a lot of fun bantor.... |
Feb 14: Second set of six triangle blocks is done Feb 17: Third set is eight triangle blocks is done Feb 20: Fourth set of 22 triangle blocks is done Feb 21: Fifth set of 12 diamond blocks is done Mar 28: Finalized our IQ pattern Mar 29: Removed & trimmed borders to get rid of waves Mar 30: Borders re-attached. Loaded. Quilting halted. Slight IQ pattern glitch Mar 31: Glitch fixed with not just one, but two, IQ pattern options. Apr 01: QUILTING DAY !!!!! Had a bit of foolish fun with Holly! Apr 02: It is officially a QUILT !! Apr 08: Binding is attached & have started hand binding. Apr 09: FINISHED! Feb 27: Assembled blocks into 6 large triangle wedges Mar 01: DONE! The top is in one piece! Mar 20: Borders are on, Backing is ready Mar 27: Sandy and I are working on a custom IQ pattern. |
Dec 28: Inner top done. Puzzling over what to use for the inner border.
Jan 19: Finished adding the borders. Ready for quilting.
Apr 11: Loaded to quilt. (Customers come first & this is the first break I've had!!)
Apr 12: Quilted!
May 23: I know I posted this on RebBubble this date & so I suspect that is when I finished the binding. So much for details!! It is bound & finished.
Dec 25: Sold to Joanne.
What is a quilter to do? Start a new project, of course! This one has been on my SOON page awhile as I planned it and bought fabric months ago. I saw a quilt block on the eQuiltPatterns website that I fell in love with called Hunter's Star. About that time, a neighbor/friend wanted a blue quilt. I picked out a couple of matching blue batiks and decided to try them in a quilt of identical Hunter's Star blocks.
Well, that neighbor called this week & will come by soon so I got busy cutting! If he likes it, great! If not, I'll come up with something different. This is one I would love to keep, but then, truth be told I want to keep them all!! I always make quilts I like in case they stick around a long time! Keeps me smiling!
Jan 02, 2011. While the star pieces are cut out, this is more of a some day quilt than one in progress. Not made the first stitch YET even on scrap samples.
Jan 04: EQ7 images added
April 29: Began piecing
May 08: Finished piecing.
May 29: Quilting. Uh Oh! The circles ate up my stars when I used the extra warm Quilter's Dream Puff Batting. Ah! but it so light and warm. Just wonderful.
June 03: Binding finished!
My daughter gave me the kit before Christmas 2009 to make into a shop sample. I was working on it before the longarm arrived in Dec 2009 while I still had a second bedroom.
Pieced 01/21/2010.
Longarmed by Kelley Jones of Ye Olde Forest Quilters.
Bound 02/15/2011 & sold to a friend on RedBubble, Rikki Woods, who bought it as a birthday present for her husband.
This was my "I didn't know I was supposed to square the blocks too!" quilt. No wonder I had so much trouble trying to get the points to line up. How did I learn? I was at the shop on day and asked a friend about a quilt sample she had done that was on the wall. When she said it took a lot of time to square and re-square each block as she went ... a light came on. Oh! Duh! That makes a lot of sense. It is a miracle this complex pattern came together at all. Kelley, my son-in-law, longarmed it for a shop sample. Later my daughter gave it back to me. I sold it for a ridiculously low price, something I would never do again. Quilt and learn.
Fabrics by Barbara Brackman.
Backing is cotton sateen.
Longarm Design Pattern: Baptist Fan typical of Civil War era
