Nov 20: We still need to come up with the usual longarming details--what to quilt on it, thread & density. You know how doing the wee hours you can't get a thought out of your head? This morning it was Modern Squares like I did on Around Town. Thinking silver thread. I showed Kathy what Joan & I did on the WVU quilt. so she is considering something like that or footballs like on several of Joan's sports quilts Still TBD.
Nov 23: The fabric is here & perfectly matched. Dec 20: Made a couple of practive y-seams & attic windows. Not too bad. Dec 22: Got out the UNC fabric to see how the fussy cutting would go. Since fussy cutting wastes a lot of fabric, I realized I needed 2 more yards for good measure. Two yards is exactly what Fabric.com had left so I ordered it at once. Dec 28: The rest of the fabric is here. Dec 30-31: Prewashing. Jan 01, 2017: Cut feature fabric squares & all strips including backing. Jan 02: Piecing the window blocks. Done. Jan 03: Rows are done. Jan 04: Rows are together & thus the quilt center is done. Only the borders are left. Jan 12: Sashing border is on. Jan 13: Guess what? Iam not perfect...yet. I was adding the white border & got curious when I had not cut enough strips. When I checked back over everything, I found my error. I had the blocks as 10.5" which is what I was supposed to do. Instead, I did the fussy cut blocks at 10.5" to get that nice layout making the blocks 13". The quilt has grown from 50x80 to 64x93. I cut the backing way back when instead of waiting until the top was done. Of course, it is too small now. Ordered fabric for larger backing. And so it goes. Jan 18: Quilt top finished. Using Vickie Malaski's Football pantograph with even rows offset 50%. Jan 19: New backing is in & prewashed. Jan 20: Backing is pieced. Ready to quilt. Feb 04: Prepped. Feb 05 Loading. Feb 06: Quilted. Feb 07: Binding is attached. Started hand work. Feb 15: Binding is finished. The quilt is finished.

Oct 24: The meeting was fun. After a nice dinner, we received patterns & sewing directions, a numbered tag/label to sew into the back seam and logo fabric for the bottoms of the feet. The entire supply on hand was picked up by the attendees. More will be ordered for those still wanting to make some bears. We do all the sewing but leave little slits for another team to do the stuffing--legs, arms, head & body. I am going to try to longarm some flannel to make the three I have agreed to do. Stay tuned.
Oct 25: I tried the quilting using a variegated thread. It was beautiful but puckered too much. I abandoned the idea as too time consuming. Started cutting out body parts. Using 3 colors of Dit Dot flannel. Oct 26: Cutting. Oct 28: Finished cutting. Started sewing. Having trouble doing the eyes. Hope to farm that task out to someone else. HA! Learned how to free motion on my Janome so the hardest part is done. Oct 29: Made the heads. Nov 06: Made the bodies & legs. Nov 07: Made the arms. Got the bears into 1 piece each. Whew! Three rare bears are ready to ship for someone else to stuff. Oct 10: I have tried for over 3 years to get an idea of what a friend might want in a quilt. Now I have it: blue (slate) with cream (not grey), floral or geometric or blenders okay, no flannel, no wool. Starting the process.
Oct 11: Found a quilt pattern I love on GourmetQuilter.com & bought the pattern. Glad I did because I did not realize from their picture that the squares alternate between light & dark which works perfectly for me. I have modified it into a 52 x 70 lap quilt. Fabric is ordered. Oct 15: The fabric is here - several charm packs, 1 mini charm pack & yardage for inner border and backing. Yes I was going for free shipping so I bought a bit more than I need. Bet Joan can use some of the leftovers in her veterans quilts. Oct 18: Started piecing. The quilt is 9-patch blocks alternating between lights & darks. Oct 19: Completed the layout plan. Oct 24: Top center completed. Opted for a simpler single border. Quilt top is finished. Backing is pieced. Ready to quilt. Oct 25: Considering 2 patterns. Loading. Going with the wedding vine--gently flowing with the ups and down of a happy life! Using Dream Orient batting with Bottom Line Cream on top & Silver in the bobbin. Oct 26: Quilted. Oct 29: Squared. Binding attached. Clip basted. Started doing hand work. Oct 31: Finished the binding. Will hand deliver today. Sep 22: Babies grow up into toddlers, yes they do. Three years ago, I made a pair of quilts for baby boy twins. I hope they love this one too & can share it.
Sep 27: The fabric is here. Prewashing. Started with the dark fabric to see if it would bleed. Woah yes indeed! And this is a Robert Kaufman fabric. I emailed Kaufman & got an immediate impressive & caring response. We are working through the issue. I love quilters! And our suppliers. The fabric is fine. Sep 28: After pre-washing & because when I bought fabric, I didn't take into account directional borders & backing, I had to adjust my quilt dimensions. I also wanted to utilize the extra backing width for the side front borders. Tricky stuff out of the norm. My quilt is now 61 x 84 & I am using every square inch of the fabric. After all that complicated work, I went ahead & cut out everything while the details were fresh in my mind and then started adding borders. Still have one left plus the backing seam which I am going to try to align. Sep 29: Added final border & thus the quilt top is finished. Pieced the backing. Loading. You may wonder why I am going forward with longarming this quilt. The pattern I am using is one that gave me fits on the last quilt using the same design. The machine is now perfect for this design. I am taking advantage of this before I make adjustments for the next quilt. Doing the design rather small at 1" rows. Quilting my ZZag pattern using Warm & Plush batting with Bottom Line gold thread. Sep 30: Got back & batting loaded. When loading the top, I realized I didn't have enough backing. It was barely 1-2" wider than the top, not enough to allow for the clamps. (I had forgotten that I intended to add leaders.) I went ahead and basted the top trying to convince myself I could be the clamps. After a sanity break, I came back home & unloaded everything. Now adding leaders all the way around for good measure. (Don't tell my longarmer I don't know how to properly piece a backing.) The leaders are on so back to loading. Loaded. Oct 01: Quilted. Oct 06: Squared & attached binding. Oct 13: Finished binding. Oct 14: Delivered. Sep 20: I've known Shannon for years. Yesterday I learned she needs a soft, cuddly quilt for these moments in her life. Her favorite color is yellow ... oh and orange (... and blue & pink--I tried but couldn't work them in).
Sep 21: Originally, I planned to come up with a whole cloth quilting design. Found a Donna Kleinke sashing pattern Joyful Teardrops that I really like. Sep 23: The fabric is here. Pre-washed the flannel and border fabric (everything except the charm squares). Oct 03: Started cutting & piecing. Oct 04: Quilt center is done. Added 1st border. Oct 05: Added last 2 borders and thus the quilt top is finished. Loading. Decided to use wool batting. Oct 06: Quilted. Squared the quilt. Attached the binding. Oct 09: Binding is finished. Oct 10: Delivered.
Aug 22: Been toying with some ideas for one of Joan's veteran's quilt. This is a modification of my Sharp Sewing Supplies Logo Quilt design I did back in early 2015.
Aug 23: Fabric is ordered. Aug 24: Working on a cutting guide for strips & squares. Specs are in my Strip Tubing book. Aug 25: Stonehenge Eagles fabric is here. Aug 26: Can't find the ruler I used to make half square triangles from strips but found one better suited for this project & ordered it. Aug 27: Fabrics are here. Aug 29: Practicing & testing my cutting chart. Aug 30: Pre-washed the fabrics. Ruler is here. Sep 01: Cutting strips & corner squares. Sep 02: Strips are cut. Tubes are sewn. Sep 03: Cutting half square triangles. Only cut one strip of each color combination for now. Sep 04: Working from the center star out. Finished the center 1/3. Sep 05: Added sashing above & below center section. Sep 11: Where does time go!! Cutting more strips into squares. Sep 14: Piecing more stars ... Sep 18: Piecing more stars ... Sep 19: Have cut out everything I need for the last 5 stars. Nov 21: Finally got back to this quilt and finished the last 5 star blocks. Sashing & borders left to do. Nov 22: Today we shall know. The sashing will tone down & make this quilt, I think. Got the vertical sashing & rows done in the midst of an otherwise chaotic day. Dec 04: Adding horizontal sashing & inner blue border. Dec 05: Quilt top is finished. Will use ZZag Mine with Bottom Line #654 Oatmeal thread & Warm & White batting. Dec 06: Backing is ready & half loaded. Stopped to illustrate my process for cutting the batting. If I forget to do this before I start loading, I do it before I pin the bottom side of the backing so nothing is in the way. (Yep, I have been known to finish loading the backing, realize I am ready for the batting & it is not cut.) Trimming threads before I load the top. Loaded. Need to program then ready to quilt. Dec 07: Quilting ... mostly without hassles. Dec 08: Quilted. Joan will do the binding. This will go to one of her high school class veterans. Jun 06: Started this post to capture my ideas so I can get back to longarming. Must leave things tidy to be able to do that. I (think I) am wanting to come up with a simple but profoundly beautiful whole cloth wall hanging inspired by what I did for Dorothy. My research convinced me that the tree of life has profound scripture based meaning. It shares the theme I have in mind that LIFE matters, that LIFE is a choice no matter the past & that there is HOPE & LOVE even when we can't see or feel it. "The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). These words changed my choices & thus my life. I hope this creation (whatever it turns out to be) will be soothing to anyone seeing it & perhaps invite conversation. Curious where I will end up with these ideas but the process has begun.
Jun 08: Need some quiet time this evening so I am drawing another idea actually on IQ this time. It looks like a coaster. Needs some spacial adjustments if nothing else. Jun 09: Showed Dorothy my first draft. Of course she asked if I could incorporate a cross in the design. Yep. Jun 12: Tweaked the patterns. Using Quilters Dream Wool batting to add definition. Jun 18: Quilted a 16" version of #2. Jun 19: Combined the patterns in the circular frame into one pattern. Jun 20: Quilted a 16" version of #3. Jul 01: Ordered a pillow insert from Pillows XPress. Jul 11: Pillow insert is here. Pillow is done. Gave this to a very special, long time friend. Sep 13, 2015: I purchased this shop sample from Olde Forest Quilt Shoppe pieced by Paula Ginn. Fabric line is More Hearty Good Wishes by Moda. Quilt top pattern is "Take 5"--5 fabrics of equal weight in the quilt center. Just need backing, batting & time to longarm.
Sep 17: Bought backing today at Greensboro's Ye Olde Forest Quilt Shoppe. Nov 04: I promised to finish this for someone special. She needs to select her quilting pattern. Jan 02, 2016: Learned she has a pattern in mind but ... Feb 22: She is still not selecting a pattern so I can only assume she is passively refusing this gift. So be it. May 30: My friend & neighbor, Eddunio Gomez, asked for another quilt & this one is perfect. He has one quilt already with these fabrics. This one is for a grandson. He has said several times how nice his quilt is because he doesn't get too hot or too cold--just comfortable. Wish I could take credit but that is thanks to the batting. Jun 22: Loaded ready to quilt. Jun 23: Quilted. Jun 24: Squared the quilt. Made & attached the binding. Clipped ready for handwork. Jun 26: Binding is finished.
Joan Taylor's sister, Lu Ann, coordinates a blanket drive each fall for Georgetown University's Transplant Unit for Children. One of the kids will receive this quilt

Jan 08: Needing a car detailer, I remember hearing of one here in Fleetwood. A couple of phone calls later, I met Marty & thus made a new friend & business acquaintance when I took my car by for an estimate. With an insurance claim involved, he has had to go above & beyond the ordinary. Quilt time. Jan 14: When he came to get my car, I showed him some quilts & handed him some books. One quilt kept holding his attention so we knew this was going to be his in time. Practiced piecing a block and then watched several how to videos. Feeling more comfortable as I go. Jan 15: Started this blog. Priced fabrics. Played with the placement of fabrics. The right light fabric will make this quilt. So far, I haven't found it. I thought finding a delicate blue on white would be easy but it isn't. I save $100 on this quilt shopping online but just lost 1 of my key fabrics to someone else. Aaaargh. Jan 16: Ordered fabric. Jan 17: Pieced a sample block using the technique in this Designs by Dianne video. Jan 18: It has occurred to me that Wedding Ring digital quilting patterns should fit this quilt nicely. I found a number of options and have posted them with overlays for Marty to consider. I have my favorites so curious what he will like. So far our design tastes sync perfectly. Jan 28: The fabric is here. Feb 24: Prewashed all the fabric. Feb 25: Cut squares and enough strips to get started sewing. Feb 26: Started piecing. Got the first round of white fabric added & trimmed. Feb 27: Got the first round of blue added. Trimming. Feb 28: Decided to go ahead do all the rounds on 4 blocks just to see how it will look. Done. Mar 01: Four corner blocks are done except for their black corners. Mar 02: Finished the corner blocks. Working on the remaining 8 center blocks & all 14 side blocks. I ordered fabric based on information in EQ7. Usually they estimate more than what is needed. I admit I am a bit nervous that I have enough of everything since I have not tried to calculate how many strips of each color I actually need. Mar 03: Finished 2 full rounds. Have 2 to go. Mar 04: Persisting sluggishly. Mar 05: Blue 3 is on & now needs pressing & trimming. Mar 06: Trimmed. Mar 07: Adding last round of light. Marty selected Traditional DWR pattern set by Darlene Epp (Trillium House Designs). I've been sampling a couple of pattern sets & prefer this one by far. Mar 08: Well darn. I am 2/3 of a 1.75" strip of light fabric short to complete the blocks. Can still can get a lot done while waiting on more fabric already ordered on Sunday. Bought the Traditional DWR Set. Mar 09: Worked on IQ using pattern set to program the layout plan including border layouts. Needs tweaking but I have a working plan. Mar 11: The light fabric is here. Been working on the blocks as I find the time. Mar 12: Prewashed new fabric. Mar 13: Finished piecing the blocks except for black corners. Mar 19: Finished trimming the blocks. Now need to add black corners. Quilted the sample I pieced back in Jan. Apr 15: After a much too long break, I am adding the rest of the black corners... Apr 16: The corners are on & the binding is made. Just needs pressing. Apr 25: Full speed ahead until piecing is finished. Blocks are finished. Squaring blocks as I go & opening seams I have to match. One row done. The fabric is very forgiving as I press after matching points. Apr 26: Power was out most of the day but still got all the blocks squared and seams that need to be pressed open. Apr 27: Finished sewing the rows. Next press rows and then sew 5 long seams to finish the quilt center. Sewed four & basted the 5th. Apr 28: Quilt top is pieced! |
Quilting
May 17: Prepping. Using wide backing. While pressing the backing, I noticed a streak about 1/4" by 2'. Strange since I pre-washed this fabric on Feb 24 with all the others, pressed front & back & refolded. Don't know how I missed it. As much as I don't like vertical backing seams, I will seam around this. Cut the seam. May 18: Sewed the seam with acceptable results. Prepped. Loaded. Ready to quilt. IQ patterns need tweaking to be quiltable. May 19: Finished programming the patterns in IQ. Design looks the same but vastly different technically. After a deep breath, I'll start quilting. A note: the time to sew this layout is minimal. The time to set up each block & pattern will take patience & time. I have plenty of both today. Quilting. My needle is skipping stitches. Need to take out & redo the top border after I adjust the needle. Well, that didn't help so I stitched the bottom section from left to right. That worked. It also means all other places on the borders programmed from L to R need to be switched. May 20: Got the top borders done & turned the corners. Start on blocks tomorrow. May 21: This is HARD! May 22: After 2 days of struggle, while I was napping, I figured out what I need to do. Last 2 rows look so much better. After I finish, I am going back row by row & redoing them. May 23: Finished the borders. Redoing sections that need it. Only one more day I hope. May 24: Quilted !!!!!!! Attached binding. May 31: Started hand work. Jun 04: Binding finished. Jun 05: Marty stopped by to receive his quilt. He left a gift bag on the table. I forgot about it and didn't open it until long after he left. Oh, yes! Just the other night, I wanted to go to sleep to candle light but didn't dare. Now I can because these electric lights are on a timer. |
I bought what was left this fabric when Dennis fell in love with it. The quilt--a son's (Dennis) gift to his mom (Audrey). Design is a joint effort by Dorothy Wonder and myself. I am making two very similar quilts thus the redundancy. Fabrics include Arts & Craft by Michael Miller, Moda Navy Grunge, Moda Manilla Grunge & Kona Cotton Cardinal. |
Jan 09: Dennis loves the quilt that came to mind when I knew I wanted to make him one. That would be To Sir With Love. He also loves my Arts & Crafts & has commissioned me to make one for this mom. I reserved the rest of the fabric at the quilt store until I could get there Monday. I have met Audrey over the phone so she is involved in some of the choices. Great to work with since Dennis doesn't have a clue except for when it comes to what he likes.
Jan 10: Worked out the design with Dorothy Wonder who wanted the rest of the fabric. I had just enough for two quilt tops.
Jan 11: Bought the feature & some of the border fabrics.
Jan 12: Bought the rest of the border fabrics in Greenboro.
Jan 13: I will use Warm & Plush batting & Medium Blue Bottom Line thread.
Apr 26: Power was off today so I got this out and cut the center panel.
Apr 29: Cut all the borders & binding. Binding is ready to attach. Added 4 of the 5 borders.
Apr 30: Finished piecing. Made the backing. Programmed IQ. Ready to load & quilt tomorrow.
May 01: Quilted.
May 02: Squared. Working on the binding.
May 04: Binding finished & thus the quilt is done.
When Dorothy saw this fabric--I had enough for one more quilt--all that was left to do was decide what size & how to get there. This is a joint design effort with lots of trial & error until we got it right. Enlarged from my little quilt to cover a queen bed, my simple no-piece quilt has become a daunting challenge of adding 5 borders without creating any waves. The narrow navy borders are 1.5". The light blue & white are 1". Total quilt size 68 x 85. (Mine is 56 x 74). Fabrics include Arts & Craft by Michael Miller, Moda Navy Grunge, Moda Vanilla Grunge & Moda Bella Solids 30's Blue. |
Jan 11: Bought feature & some of the border fabrics.
Jan 12: Bought the rest of the border fabrics.
Jan 13: Dorothy wants Dream Wool batting . I will use Medium Blue Bottom Line thread.
Apr 26: Power was off today so I got this out and cut the center panel.
Apr 29: Cut all the borders & binding.
Apr 30: Don't have enough of the backing I was planning to use so thinking flannel. Dorothy will also select a pattern(s) (perhaps whole cloth) that will show up dramatically on the solid backing.
May 03: Ordered two flannel backings. Back & forth with Dorothy on pattern layout ideas.
May 07 Backings are here.
May 11: Started programming some pattern ideas in IQ.
May 15: Worked out several plans including one I really like.
May 16: Dorothy likes it too. All the designs are by Donna Kleinke. Needs some work but at least we have a plan.
May 18: Pre-washing the flannel backing--Mottled Royal Blue by A.E. Nathan (fabric.com).
May 20: Programmed IQ.
May 22: Colored in the light blue to mimic the backing whole cloth effect.
May 24: Added the first border.
May 26: Finished piecing the quilt top.
May 27: Loaded.
May 28: I will be quilting a mirror image so it will appear as shown on the back. Getting the tension right on the grapes is proving to quite a challenge. Think I finally have it. Wow--38 minutes just to quilt the top border! Quilting underway.
May 29: Still quilting.
May 30: Still quilting.
May 31: Quilted. It's raining so pictures are a challenge. Dorothy will do the binding which I have ready for her to attach.
Dec 05: Pre-washed & pieced the top and then the backing. Using some Jim Shore/Quilting Treasures fabric I have had for several years for the backing. The red from my stash is either Kona Cotton Flame Red or Kona Cotton Cardinal. The outer border is Navy Grunge by Moda.
Dec 06: Planning to use Warm & Plush batting & Bottom Line Medium Blue thread. The IQ pattern is called Tapestry. Quilted. Made the binding. Squared the quilt.
Dec 07: Attached the binding & started sewing it down.
Jan 09: Binding is finished.
Jan 11: Bought fabrics to make two more of these, one for Audrey & one for Dorothy.
Nov 23, 2017: Sold this quilt to Eddunio Gomez to give his secretary
Sep 18: (1) Cut the 10" squares.
Sep 19: (2) Lay out the squares. (3) Sew the squares together. (4) Add a border.
Sep 23: (5) Cut the pinwheels.
Sep 24: (6) Sew the pinwheel blocks together. (7) Add border. Quilt top finished. Need backing.
Dec 27: Bought the backing--Eggplant Grunge.
Jan 06, 2016: Pieced the backing. Have decided to use Warm & Plush batting, Bottom Line thread #654 Oatmeal & Easy Street pantograph.
Jan 09: Loaded.
Jan 10: Quilted.
May 31: Squared.
Jun 24: Made & attached the binding.
Oct 15: Finished the binding & started using right away. (Actually I had a lot of things going on & forgot to log the finish date so I am guessing here.)
Oct 19, 2018: Having more quilts than I can enjoy, I offered a very special woman, who is passionate about caring for others, her choice of several quilts. She chose this one. This is why I make quilts and love doing so.
Oct 25: Delivered the quilt. I am always so excited when one of my quilts finds a home where it will be used.
Another "Just Can't Cut It" modified to add pop & variety. Feature fabric is from Kaufman's fabric line... Diary of a Wimpy Kid Jan 28, 2019: Wimpy now has a permanent home. One of my all time favorite quilts will be used for years to come by the young daughter of Jonathan Waddell of Unlimited Heating & Air. This is the third time I have needed Jonathan's services for some furnace work. This time he agreed to some good ole mountain horse trading. Love these hills. |
Apr 23: Purchased the rest of the fabric for making a "Just Can't Cut It" quilt, thanks to Sew Original.
Apr 24: Cut out the top. Ready to sew.
Apr 25: Piecing the top.
May 08: Thought of a way to enhance this quilt significantly ... or so I think. It means taking out 18 seams.
May 23: Bought backing - Moda Grunge Ocean. Took out those seams. Ready to trim and sash those Wimpy blocks.
May 31: Trimmed the Wimpy blocks down from 12.5" to 9.5". Found enough Onyx (black) Grunge to make the sashing.
Jun 14: Pieced the quilt center. I like it! Now for the border(s). Thinking I won't go for the red. Maybe just a thin black & white swirl. We'll see...
Jun 15: Decided to go with the original plan after all. Quilt top is pieced.
Dec 24: Made the backing. Selected Zen Roses for my panto. Bottom Line Silver thread.
Dec 25: Before I was a longarmer myself, I bought a piece of Tuscany Wool batting I purchased from Ye Olde Forest Quilt Shoppe that I am going to use. I usually like everything--fabrics & quilting pattern--to fit logically & aesthetically but this quilt bears the dichotomy of a young boy's casual journal drawings & classy quilted roses. So be it. I think the Ocean Grunge backing is going to be stunning. Loaded & quilting.
Dec 26: Quilted.
Jan 05, 2016: Made & attached the binding.
Jun 28: Clipped and started hand binding.
Jul 19: Binding is finished. I'm keeping this one.
Jan 28, 2019: Well, it's 2.5 years later. Only used one season, I figure Wimpy needs a better home where it can be loved instead of boxed up in a closet. See note at top of this post.
Apr 16: Botched first attempt at 1/2 rectangle triangles. Did manage to start some blocks.
Apr 18: Added fabrics to EQ7 & updated the rendition.
Apr 23: Bought 1/2 rectangle ruler.
May 23: Bought backing fabric.
Aug 30: Made some progress after many mistakes. Finally have this & the tool figured out. The quilt is made with only 2 blocks. Block 1 is around the edge. Block 2 is in the center. I am glad this is a small quilt. Finished "1" blocks.
Aug 12, 2016: Resuming the piecing.
Aug 13: Piecing the Block 2's.
Aug 14: Piecing the Block 2's.
Aug 15: Blocks are done. Layout is done. Started putting rows together. On hold for now.
Aug 21: Quilt center is done.
Aug 23: First border is on.
Aug 26: Pieced the backing. Outer border is on. Quilt top is finished.
Mar 30, 2017: My good friends, Angelina & Eddie Gomez, are here this week from Florida. Today it occurred to me that this quilt is Angelina's. She selected Folk Art Flower panto which will be stunning on the navy Grunge backing. I will use a cream thread to match the background & Warm & White batting. Just need to get this quilted before Eddie & Angelina come up from Florida next time, well, actually before they leave to go back home next time.
Aug 07: Eddie & Angela got in yesterday so I want to take a break & get this done this week. I have until Saturday. Prepped & loaded ready to quilt.
Aug 08: Quilted. Squared the quilt & made the binding.
Aug 09: After attaching the binding, I will be doing the hand work until finished, hopefully tomorrow. This is a relatively small quilt (52 x 64), so it shouldn't take so very long even though I am very slow at hand binding. I have never been able to speed up the process since I only do a ladder (invisible) stitch. Been trying to talk myself into doing machine binding on this one but just can't get there. Just can't.
Mar 29: Woke up mulling over this fabric. I purchased 2 panels & now know I want to use just one. Went to dinner with my some friends & showed them the fabric. They claimed the project for a 1 year little girl at church who has stolen their hearts. Played with designs all day. Unable to sleep, I came up with many more.
Mar 30: My friends selected a design from the dozens I showed them.
Apr 01: Bought the extra coordinating fabrics that were available: teal, orange & pink. Can't wait to start cutting & piecing.
Apr 02: I am going to try the impossible. It is 4 PM. The birthday party is Saturday at 6 PM. Let's see how far I get by then. By 8 PM I had a nap, fussy cut 52 3.25" squares & started piecing 5 of the what I am calling the alpha blocks. Worked until I finished alpha blocks.
Apr 03: Did all the cutting. The colored blocks are pieced and squared.
Apr 04: Finished squaring all the blocks. Joined the rows. Hoping to finish piecing the top in time for the party so my friends can show what their gift will be. After that, I will get back to normal & finish this in queue sequence. Center is done. Adding borders. Quilt top is finished 1 hour before the party. Or so I thought. I called my friend to tell her the top was finished only to learn the party was really at 2 PM. All for nothing. She could have called and told me. So I apologize to everyone for spending so much time on this project this week. I am disheartened to put ti very mildly.
Dec 26: Finally got back to this, pieced the backing & loaded it for quilting. Using Warm & White batting, Bottom Line Silver thread and Lil Hands N Feet panto by Patricia Ritter. Thinking that all the cartoon hands & feet need a bit of balance with reality. Quilted. Kinda neat that the hands & feet show up as fingers & toes.
Jan 05: Made & attached the binding.
Feb 02: This quilt now has a child, namely Lisa's 18 month. old grandson.
Feb 13: Binding finished.
Feb 23: Delivered--kept getting snowed in.
Piecing
2013 Sep 14: Purchased the project at Ye Olde Forest Quilt Shop in Greensboro. Couldn't pass it up. The two fabrics in the squares are no longer available anywhere. I love both. Sep 15: EQ7 rendition. Sep 16: Ordered some rulers including Tri-Recs Tools and Angler 2. Sep 25: Started cutting triangles. Oct 03: I hope to make significant progress today. Well, I managed to sew 30 side triangles onto 30 center triangles at the wrong place so I did not get the square edge I needed. After ripping out those 30 seams, I decided to wait for another day to try again. Oct 04: Finally moving the right direction. Oct 05: 30 blocks done. 2016 Jan 08, 2016: This is now Dennis's quilt so time to get back to it. It has simply needed someone to love it. |
Jan 21: Found some flannel backing I like perhaps better than what I have on hand so I ordered it. Got the 140 side black triangles sewn onto the white triangles.
Jan 22: Working on adding small lower corner squares. Finished what I had cut from 2013. Started basting pairs of blocks when Oops! I was supposed to press seams open. Took the time to go back and do that. Putting together what I have now before doing any more cutting.
Jan 23: Have everything together until I cut more. Two rows complete.
Jan 24: Back to the cutting board today, so to speak. Need 60 each of the small squares to sew onto the black & white squares. First, I went pattern hunting & posted some overlays for Dennis to consider. The squares are complete & ready to be joined into blocks...tomorrow.
Jan 25: Basted the blocks together in pairs.
Jan 28: Ready to sew those basted seams from Monday. Completed the last 30 blocks. Backing fabric came in.
Jan 29: I have terrible success using pins to match points on seams that are pressed open. I have found that Wonder Clips work great. They hold the point together until I can get the fabric just left of the needle. From there I can hold it until I get a few basting stitches in. So easy to check points after clipping and again after basting. Rows are done except for pressing.
Jan 30: After pressing & trimming the rows, I will cut and add the sashing & borders. Well, I got the sashing cut anyway.
Jan 31: The sashing is on.
Feb 01: Two borders are on. Two to go. Already the quilt top has outgrown my full size bed.
Feb 03: Third border is on. Now the black. Side borders are on.
Feb 04: Only top & bottom borders left. Dennis has chosen Lovegrass Petite for his pantograph. Spent the day doing overlays on this and another quilt. Perhaps can finish those last two borders tomorrow.
Feb 05: All borders are on & thus the quilt top is finished.
Quilting
Feb 21: Decided on Bottom Line #622 Gray. Of course I only have a partial spool & no bobbins so have just placed an order. While checking IQ for thread requirements, I tweaked the plan slightly to place the pattern just so in the borders where it will show the most. Meanwhile, I am adding 3" leaders to the sides of the backing & going ahead with loading. After that, I'll just shift gears and start cutting Pineapple Rhapsody until the thread gets here. Back & batting loaded.
Mar 13: Top is loaded. Quilting.
Mar 16: Quilted. Next is the binding.
Mar 21: Ordered black fabric for binding.
Mar 28: Made binding.
Mar 31: Attached binding.
Apr 08: Clipped the binding. Ready for hand work.
Apr 22: Working full time on the hand binding.
Apr 24: Binding is finished. And thus the quilt is finished.
Apr 25: Delivered in person.
| This is my second Twister project. This time I am using the small Twister tool, a Birchbark Lodge charm pack, some background and sashing fabric and the pattern called "Twisting Round the Block" from the book Let's Twist...Again by Marsha Bergren for CS Designs. While in Greensboro for a few days, I just had to pick out something fun to do so most of the cutting out is already done. |
May 06-07: Cutting out the twister blocks.
May 08: Twister blocks are done. Ready for sashing.
May 11: I admit it. I hate doing sashing. For some reason my vertical sashing was puckering like a gather on my first try to add the horizontal sashing. Then there is the fun of trying to align the vertical sashing on either side of the 2" horizontal sashing. Anyway, it is done now.
May 12: Quilt top is finished.
Jun 10, 2014: Some long time ago, I loaned Kelley this quilt to use as a shop sample. It promptly got lost. Today he found it & is shipping it home.
Jul 01, 2015: Pieced the backing, i.e. kept adding fabric until I had enough to load.
Jul 31: Prepped & loaded. Using Dream Orient batting & So Fine! #452 Bone thread top & back. Rows are a 11.5 inches & quite dense due to the details in the design. With such an uneven coverage, I don't want to go too large/loose.
Aug 01: Quilting. The back will have a whole cloth effect I really like.
Aug 02: Quilted.
Aug 05: Binding is attached. Only hand work left to do.
Nov 07: Finally started the hand work.
Nov 26: Thanksgiving week. Eddunio Gomez asked for a another quilt for his cabin here because he is so pleased with his Hearty Good Wishes quilt--how breathable & comfortable it is. He selected this one.
Feb 15: Eddie is back in town from Florida so I focusing on finishing this while he is here. By the time the snow & ice outside melts enough for me to hike down to his cabin, I will be finished.
Feb 16: Bound & thus finished. Hand delivered to Eddie.
