"Authentic horses" - that was the directive. A striking contrast indeed but I probably should have tried to do more piecing with this fabric. My luck, if I tried to piece it I would have gotten just horse tails in several blocks. Myra loves this quilt as it & has claimed it for her step-son (Charles' son), Caleb, as thanks for all his hard work helping them get their home in shape to move in. Dec 26: Bought fabric.
Dec 28: Pieced the top. This will either go to Charles or Myra's dad. I will probably have to cut it down for "dad". The center section is 2 yards--a bit much for a lap quilt. The whole top is 80 x 100 so that is a whole lot of onyx gringe side border. Feb 28: Bought backing fabric today which led to consider what I will use to quilt this. I instantly fell in love with some green & yellow but ultimately opted for light cream blender backing. Progression of ideas below. Feb 29: More brainstorming. Whatever I use will not show up in the center of the top but will be very visible from the back. Letters would be a mirror image on the back. Mar 10: Myra decided on her patterns: Running Horses panto with Horse Portraits in the outer border turned to be right side up relative to the floor. After Myra left at around noon. I worked until midnight on these layouts. They look so innocent once done...don't believe it. Jun 25: Final press. loaded and quilting. Jun 28: Quilted. Jun 30: Squared. Made the binding. Jul 01: Binding is clamped and ready for needle work. Got a good start. Oct 06: Finally made some progress on the binding. Intend to at least something each evening until done. Nov 02: Finished the binding & thus the quilt.

Picked up fabric with authentic horses for a couple of quick quilts over the holidays. Dec 26: Bought fabric.
Dec 27: January birthday girl, Vanessa, picked the tame horses and helped design the quilt top. Dec 28: Pieced the top. Jan 12: Vanessa & Beth are coming over today to help with this quilt. Didn't happen. Jan 19: Vanessa is here piecing her backing. Jan 20-21: Slowly loading hoping Vanessa could join me but she is not well. Jan 22: Quilting. Jan 23: Quilted. Jan 25: More photos. Jan 28: Made & attached the binding. Will be working on it until finished. Feb 21: About 1/3 done, I turned over the rest of the binding to Myra, Vanessa's mom. Thus my work is done. Mar 10: I asked Myra & she returned this quilt so I can finish the binding. Mar 17: On the home stretch of binding, i.e. on the final side w/all corners done. Binding work is typically slow but this one has been ridiculous. So sorry, Vanessa. FINISHED! I bought this fabric back in July 2011 intending to make curtains for my bedroom. I have decided to make drapes for the living room instead. I have just enough to cover the french doors & thus block out any drafts. Quilted curtains...wonder if this is a first? Oct 14: Loading. Pattern selected & programmed.
Oct 17: Quilting left panel. Oct 21: Finished left panel. Loading right panel. Oct 22: Both panels quilted. Going to shop for binding. Made the binding. Jan 12, 2012: Trimmed curtains to correct size & made straps for hanging. Jan 13: Attached binding on both panels. Prepped (i.e. trimmed & clamped) for hand binding. Jan 17: First panel is bound. Jan 20: Second panel is bound and curtains are hung. This much brighter look will definitely take some getting used to. 2010 - 2014 We each have our strengths--quilt design is NOT mine. I knew enough to realize my plan would not do justice to this fabric. With help from Joan Taylor (my friend, customer & sometimes partner) & Joanne (my daughter & quilt shop owner), I am excited about this revision of my original November 2010 plan. The focal fabrics are from Moda's Winter on Walden Pond. The tan border is from Khaki Ethnic Echoes. The green sashing is a blender Piecing Jan 2012___Dec 22: New plan suggestion from Joan Dec 25: Joanne helped me select additional coordinating fabrics. Now all I need is time!! Jan 01: Start cutting Jan 03: Making stars Jan 10: Now have all the parts of the stars made and all the pieces cut except the green inner border. Not sure how wide I want that to be just yet. This is bigger than I imagined and the two borders will add 14-16" to the height and width since this quilt is square. Piecing it will shrink it. Should be about perfect when done. Jan 11-12: Assembling the pieces into a quilt top. Still need to attach corners and 2 borders. Jan 13: While snowing, added corners and borders, completing the top. Too big to photograph though. Quilt top finished. Jan 18: Prepared the backing. Jan 29: Added three photos taken with new little Sony Camera. Can you tell a difference? Quilting & Binding Dec 2013Dec16, 2013: Decided several days ago to finish this with double wool batting for Bennie. Drew the IQ pattern today using just the mathematical sine wave. Every other row is shifted a bit to create the braid effect. Expanded the pattern to the size of the 77x77 quilt top then produced the overlay. I bought the fabric in late 2010 so I am very happy to have a final plan at last.
Dec 22: Prepped & loaded. Dec 28: Quilting. I love this pattern on this quilt. Would work for any open field scene. Quilted. Jan 05, 2014: Binding attached. Started hand work. Jan 08: Bound. |
