Feb 04: Doing 13.5" rows using Bottom Line Statue thread & Warm & White batting. Feb 06: Prepped & loaded. Feb 07: Quilting. Row 1 posted waiting for feedback. Change of plans. Feb 08: Working out a new stitch-in-the-ditch plan. Bottom Line Red on borders, Statue on the blocks. Quilted first row. Feb 09: Continuing with rolling the quilt row by row, trimming loose threads, double checking for strays using flashlight, basting sides, block by block marking where on the quilt I want to stitch, stitching. The results are more than worth the effort. Finished row 4. Feb 10: My laser was giving me fits. I finally loosened all screws & started from scratch trying to get a better angle. From Quilt Blog by Natalia Bonner & Kathleen Whiting I have Natalia's permission to use these images here. Dec 28, 2014: Signed up for solids. If not available, batiks version would be fine.
Dec 29: Got the solids! Yes! Paid for Month 1. Jan 04, 2015: Joan Taylor has agreed to do the piecing so this is now a J&L project. Feb 22: Quilt map & first 2 6" blocks May 14: Joan is piecing a block with 93 pieces! Perhaps block 3? Jun 07: Joan is piecing away & concerned ... I'm not. Jul 15: Got in a stack of blocks from Joan today. Posted along with updated map. Dec 05: Joan mailed me an envelope with some quilt blocks. Dec 07: Expecting Joan's package, I was watching for it. Checked at 4 PM & 5 PM. Got a USPS email that it was delivered at 4:15. Called Bennie & he confirmed delivery of a brown envelope. I never got it. Dec 17: Posted a second progress map showing what is pieced, what was stolen, what is in next's month's set & what Joan has on hand. Mar 18, 2016: Met Joan in Wilkesboro for a quilt swap including a few more finished blocks. Apr 07: Took inventory of what I now have in house after the last ones Joan gave me. First A Bit Of NewsJoan shares that her brother has supplied trees to various White House events at least as far back as the Reagans. For those of you who are interested, my brother's tree farm was selected to supply the 2014 Christmas tree to Vice-President Biden. Also, some of the White House staff went to their farm in early October to flag some trees for the White House. I’m very proud of my brother, as he has spent his whole adult life working with trees. For them to win reserve champion is really nice.
Table TopperNov 06: Quilt arrived.
Nov 10: Programmed IQ, pieced & loaded backing, cut batting. Did overlays of two patterns--Billowy and my Sine Snow. Snow wins. Nov 11: Prepped the top. After loading the thread & adjusting the tension, I re-programmed IQ making it more dense. Quilting. Quilted. Sep 20: The quilt top arrived. I absolutely LOVETT. The fabrics are brushed cotton & flannel.
Joan, you've got me & my cabin mentality/simplicity down pat. Already cut the wool batting. Sep 21: Have to play. Auditioning patterns to see what I like. Comments & opinions are welcome. Sep 24: Worked most of the day on a plan. Sep 25: Started working again after getting home from Greensboro. Down to two plans using 6 patterns, 5 of which are by Donna Kleinke. I like both a lot so deciding will be hard. Time to quilt so I need to decide. Oh, and I picked up some backing fabric (Moda-Through the Winter Woods) at Ye Olde Forest Quilt Shoppe. Sep 26: Bought patterns and drawing layouts in IQ. So much better than cut and paste but still extremely time consuming. Sep 27: Another long day of planning and drawing in IQ. I think I'm done. Will sleep on it before I quilt it. Sep 28: Will use Bottom Line #618 Medium Brown thread and wool batting. Sep 29: Pieced the backing. Quilting. Somehow I deleted my perfected layout and am having to redraw it. Fortunately, I still have all the components & earlier versions. Sep 30: Redrew the desired plan before continuing. Quilting again. Oct 01: Thought sure I would finish today but when a friend is willing to clean my nasty deck with his spray washer, I drop everything and help! And treat him & his wife to dinner. Oct 02: Can see the end. Still a lot work including the side borders. Finished all but side borders. Need to unload, turn & then reload to do those. Oct 03: Quilted. The backing is a camel color very close to the tan browns on the front, not cream in the photos. The back is in effect a whole cloth quilt. Binding is attached, clipped & ready for a needle & lap time. Nov 17: Got in sheet blanket to use under the quilt & night stand cover to match. One side left to finish on the binding. Nov 20: Finished the binding. Sep 20: Quilt top arrived. If you use the search feature at the top of the page, you'll find more Noah's Ark quilts.
Sep 21: Programmed IQ. Sep 23: Reprogrammed IQ down to 4" rows. Loaded & ready to quilt tomorrow. Sep 24: Quilted. The challenge on this quilt was to be sure the linear pattern & the quilt came out even and parallel all the way down the quilt. I think I succeeded without it being obvious what I was doing.
Marianne's Quilt Story When pregnant with my second child, I thought it would be neat to make a quilt for the crib to match the curtains I made for the nursery. I took a class to learn how. The teacher gave us a different square pattern to complete each week. How I was going to make it into a baby blanket was to be determined later...much later. Also if I wanted to learn to piece them together then that was a different class as was quilting. I never finished my top but have always wanted to. Now 29 years later, Linda & Joan have agreed to finish it for me. I did the piecing by hand, not satisfied with the results on my sewing machine. I am so happy...you see, my child is having a child in August and this will be her baby's quilt. Feb 12: Marianne contacted me today about finishing this quilt she started years ago. Joan came to mind at once & has agreed to do the design & piecing of the top ... in May.
Apr 22: Joan has the quilt top pieces now and is starting to "noodle" over it as she likes to say. June: It's June now & Joan is still noodling and working with Marianne on details. Jun 09: Joan & Marianne have worked out just what to do. Joan hopes to finish her part next week. Jul 18: The quilt is here and absolutely adorable. Marianne actually made the 9th block herself. Joan's challenge was getting the blocks centered just so inside the sashing. I will not stitch over the appliques but will outline around them instead. I will attach the binding but Marianne is going to do the time consuming hand work. One day is all I need.& hope to ship mid-week around the 23rd. Jul 19: Planned the backing. Needs a bit of piecing but it matches the top & is the backing after all. Offered another option--wide enough muslin for a backing in one piece (no seams). Quilting pattern will be Hearts a Flutter with off-white thread. Jul 20: Marianne ordered the muslin. Jul 25: Got the backing...badly smudged & the wrong shade. Re-ordered. Fabric.com gave Marianne a full refund & told me to keep rather than return the fabric.) Jul 30: The re-ordered backing just came in & is perfect. Jul 31: Loading. Aug 01: Quilting. Aug 02: Quilted. Binding attached. Shipped. January 201202/09/2012 returned not quilted So, this is a first. I cannot figure out a way to do this quilt justice so Joan & I have agreed for me to return it to her. She will finish removing what I have sewn & try to get her local longarming friend to quilt it. I so hope it all works out. I don't give up easily & I do feel a longing to fight on but it is not best for anyone. Si la vie. PS: Joan just put this away as was & did nothing with it. July 201407/18/2014: It's back! Joan says just reload it, finish it & consider it good enough. I admit I am pretty darn picky but if equally picky Joan is okay with this one for what is and is not, well, then so I am. Hmmm maybe & maybe not. Joan will machine bind it.
On second thought, I must take out the smoke monopoly. I have since learned that it does not hold up in a dryer over time. Also, I already took out some of the quilting 2 years ago. There is no way I can pick up where I left off. Get to do it right after all. And so the quilt sandwich is now back to 3 pieces--top, back & batting. Clean start over. Aug 07: While re-programming this afternoon, I simplified the Forget-Me-Knot center. That opens up options. Quilted. |
