Jul 07: First contact. Swoon quilt top is pieced with standard quilting cotton (color) the white background is sheets from my GGMA's stash, which seemed like a good idea at the time but the fabric is very dense. I went through several needles when piecing (Debra).
Jul 09: Pictures and more quilting details/ideas. Jul 11: Thinking Baptist Fan. Posted overlays on Playground. Jul 22: Quilt arrived. Wow! I was way off on my guesstimate about the quilt block sizes. Jul 26: Silver thread, Dream Orient batting, 6 arcs, 1 inch spacing, no gap between rows, arcs curving up to the right. Jul 28: Cut batting which took a long time because the Bamboo/Silk batting requires delicate handling. Jul 29: Prepped. Loaded. Basting. Quilting. Deb reminded me of her first words about the fabrics as I discovered that for myself. Tough stuff. though very thin sheets are!! An open seam, a pin prick that left a dot of blood on the outer sashing...all in a day's work yet still in the category of unforeseeable circumstances. Jul 30: Still quilting. And finished! All pictures posted including the Quilt Gallery.

Jul 07: First contact.
Jul 09: Pictures and quilting details/ideas. Jul 10-19: Been posting lots of quilt EQ7 renditions & overlays on the playground. Even did a quilt sample to see if the High Seas pattern &/or wool batting would overwhelm the pinwheels. Both did. Jul 19: Changed our plan to SINE waves (working on density) & Dream Orient batting to get as much softness & drape as possible. Jul 20: Ordered the batting. Quilt top is here. Pinwheels are 3.5" * sashing is 1" so I need to redo the overlays. Jul 21: We now have a pattern & density plan. Batting is here. Thread selection is next & final step. Jul 26: Second pattern change. Now EZ Waves. Jul 28: Cut batting. Jul 31: Ordered some So Fine! prewound bobbins yesterday. While waiting for those to come in, I am testing the pattern on that earlier sample. Yep! I am taking some of it out, replacing some of the wool batting with Dream Orient & quilting it to see what happens. Magic, I hope. This is such a beautiful & large quilt, I want to get it right. Can't even imagine how much time and work and care Debra has sewn into it while working 2, wait 3 jobs. Hey, cost of living in CA is through the roof & so is fabric. Besides, Deb has agreed I can keep this one (as long as I swear it was lost in the return mail). Not to worry though as I prefer quilts that have very little drop if any--super sensitive toe ever since I dropped a new roll of W&N batting on it several years ago. Finished a small sample. Aug 03: Prepped (squared the backing). Aug 04: Loaded. Quilting. Aug 05: Quilted. |
Another video just for fun. | |
Jul 03: Ginger stopped by with her quilt & decided to stay and help out. Got it loaded and basted, ready to quilt tomorrow. Using wool batting & Light Yellow Bottom Line thread.
Jul 04: A very "friendly" quilt, Ginger transformed it (okay, with a bit of help from me) into a beautiful heirloom for herself & hubby, Tim.
Sep 01: Brought quilt & selected batting (W&W), thread (silver), pattern (Swirls 2) & density (10" rows).
The sashing doesn't want to lie flat & the stabilizer doesn't want to stay stuck much to Molly's shagrin (and mine). One can seek & take lots of advice (Molly certainly did) & still end up ... shall we say "irked" by this. Those who have made t-shirt quilts understand. I have not pieced one but have longarmed my share so I know the gotchas. Starting prepping the back - needed to square one end just a tad.
Sep 02: Prepping & loading. All this quilt needed was a proper pressing. Used a pressing cloth so I could use lots of heat & steam. Quilting.
Sep 03: Quilted.
