!! PREVIEW !! .vs Quilted Pieced by Laura Mourning So adorable! Nov 03: Laura shared this photo of a quilt she is making for her granddaughter. Nov 23: The quilt top is here. Will photograph when I start working on it. Nov 28: Just posted my proposed plan. If this quilt were not so small and cute ... but it is small and cute... I am going all out. Plus I think this plan looks nice. Since it is for a prissy 4 year old we are going with Butterflies and Stars. The crosshatch in the windows is to keep that part of the play quilt nice and flat for the doll clothes. The Megan's Feathers sashing and simple star cornerstones are for why not? No stitching over the faces is Laura's request & I so agree. Nov 29: Finally took some pictures of the quilt as I received it. Nov 30: Prepped and loaded. I only get to do this quilt once so I am dragging it out...taking my time....getting caught up on other things I have been letting go. Dec 01: Picking thread. Basted. Dec02: I was checking over my IQ plans when I accidentally deleted my entire planning directory containing both of Laura's quilts. So I redrew them & figured out a better execution scheme for this one in the process. I also discovered this quilt has 65 sections to longarm. One thing is for sure: if I never start, I will never finish. Hmmm. I am really enjoying the less intense quilting queue and am taking my own sweet time. Dec 03: Quilting. I can't see the stitching on the outer border. I hope the thread doesn't break or the bobbin run out because I would have a terrible time trying to find where to restart. LOL. The camera with dimmed lights can see far more than I can. Off to a good start. Finished first row of dolls which means from here on it is just repeats until done. Dec 04: Quilting on... Lots of other things going on today. Posted a video of a crosshatch block being quilted. Dec 05: Starting day 3 of quilting while the emails and phone are quiet! That didn't last! All done anyway. Better picture tomorrow, I hope. Dec 06: Last photos posted.
An LQS Project Pieced & Bound by Dorothy Wonder & Longarmed Here at the Cabin When a voice mail request came in from Connie Steinmetz for a UT quilt start to finish & the price tag did not scare her away, I started thinking who could help. My usual suspects are swamped. Then I knew! I grew up in Tennessee; Dorothy lives in Tennessee; Connie lives in Nashville. So two Tennesseans quilters have volunteered to get crackin' to make a special Christmas present from a TN mom to give her UT daughter. Nov 20: Got the call. She found me via Joan Taylor's UT quilt posted on this blog.
Nov 21: Dorothy got the fabric. I mailed the pattern--Take 5 by Teacher's Pet--and did an EQ7 rendition with various orange, black and white fabrics. After her day long shopping expedition, I plugged in the real fabrics Dorothy selected (except for the white on black). Nov 23: Changed black & white fabric. The layout will no doubt change too when Dorothy pieces this. Just showing the process with all its twists and turns and possibilities. Nov 28: Dorothy tells me she is being plagued with my all too frequent unforeseeable circumstances. Her first choice for white on black fabric made her dizzy. Back to the store, she selected her second white on black. When she started working with it to cut it, she noticed flaws, not in one spot but throughout. Back the store, the whole bolt was that way & of course there wasn't another white on black in the shop that would do. Off to another store, she found the perfect fabric. I can't find it online to post an image but understand it is something like the IQ pattern called Flirtatious. So that remains a surprise for all of us until it gets here. Nov 29: Read Dorothy's comment. Yeah! Nov 30: Dorothy is planning to ship this here next week. Need IQ pattern. Any ideas? Connie, I would love for you to pick it out. Call me and I'll guide you through how to do it. Dec 03: Read Dorothy's comment. The quilt is on the way & Connie is searching this site and others for an IQ pattern she likes. She chose Janet's Swirl Pano 001 by Kim Diamond to which I made a slight change. Dec 11: Dorothy shipped on Monday the 3rd. USPS routed the quilt through Denver. It arrived safely today. I have been working on two options for IQ patterns, one the Swirls Connie found & one with paisley by the the same designer, Kim Diamond. Kim does a lot of very dense designs. I spent the evening working out a way to use her design without the extreme density. I split the design across two rows so I could enlarge the quilting area. Connie has once again chosen the swirls ("I’m just not a flower girl..." - LOL) & I agree with her. Just had to pursue all options first. Dec 13: Loading. Quilting. Quilted. Dec 14: More photos. Boxed. Shipped back to Dorothy for binding. Dec 15: Dorothy has received the quilt. Dec 20: Dorothy hand delivered the quilt to Nancy as planned. No pictures of the final quilt with binding...oh well. Got an email tonight: "I have finally finished a quilt top that I started 14 yrs ago for my youngest son, on dialysis - he's still on dialysis and I would love to give it to him for Christmas." Hmmm. A phone number and a request for a call was included. I dialed & am so glad I did. A fellow North Carolinian had lost track of time--"Why are they decorating for Christmas?" DUH. Me being me, I extended the invitation I have so often to other NCers to come on up & we'll do it together and you can take it home with you. It is not a big quilt, just nice in fact. Stay tuned on Monday when we will all meet Gail Burton. A quilt for Scotty. Gail & I worked hard and got this beauty done in a day. Nov 18: Received the above picture from Gail. We're thinking about using King Tut #10003 Glowing Embers variegated red and black.
Nov 19: Gail is here. We have prepared and loaded the quilt, changed the thread, programmed IQ, basted and started quilting. We are quilting rather densely and are able to do two rows before rolling the quilt. And finished!! Great day, Gail!! Back on Dec 19th, 2011, just before Christmas, I first heard from Becca regarding a large family project. Joan & I have now contracted to do a set of three t-shirt memory quilts for her mother, Margaret, and the daughters, Becca & Allison. The goal is for each one to have a quilt that is sized to fit at least a double bed. Joan will design and piece the quilt tops & I will longarm and bind them. Work will begin in mid-January (2012). Apr 01: Joan has now received the t-shirts for Allison's memory quilt.
Aug 12: Per Joan: "I hope to finish step 3 of T-shirt 3 today (attach bonding to all 35 pieces -- about 1/3 done so far)." She did it! Next weekend she will buy fabric for the sashing and backing. Oct 4: Joan is getting closer to finishing this. Should be here within a week or two. Nov 08: The quilt is here. Nov 28: Allison has selected her IQ Pattern-Flirtatious. Jan 07: Next in the queue. Jan 08: Prepared and loaded the backing. Cut the batting. Jan 09-11: Worked on the top as I had time. Quilt is now loaded. Jan 13: Quilting. And quilted. Jan 14: Cut the binding Jan 15: Pieced and attached the binding Jan 18: Binding finished This quilt beautifully pieced by Kristin Minnick features Minnesota fabrics. Oct 29: Kristin & I began talking about me doing this quilt for her. Nov 05: Quilt arrived. Nov 13: Kristin has picked her panto called Deep Woods. Nov 13-14: Will be using King Tut #902 Stone Age with either Gray, DkBlue or MedBlue bobbins, whichever blends best.. Nov 16: Programming IQ. Kristin has chosen the 50% offset layout. Nov 17: Preparing to load...loading...basting...quilting. The quilting is going well but I can tell already I will not have enough thread. My 2012 luck has returned once again. I'll keep going as far as I can and then will have to unload due to other commitments. I'll order more thread which will come in early December. Finished two rows. Each takes twice as long as the average row. Nov 18: Still quilting on hoping for the best. Whew!! Had enough thread after all and this beauty is quilted! Will try for some morning pictures before sealing the box for shipping. Nov 19: Final pictures are posted! The fabric is Kate Spain's 12 days of Christmas and the backing is ice skating elves. Perhaps Nina will share her blog with everyone. Ah yes to her quilts! Oct 12: First Contact
Oct 13: Photo from Nina's blog posted above Nov 03: Quilt arrived. I'll take better photos later. Nov 04: Bed photos. Nov 12: Loaded, basted, programmed--i.e. ready to quilt. Nina wants loose density so the quilt will be nice and soft. The IQ pattern was created last year by my sister, Sandy Daugherty. Nov 13: Quilting. And Quilted. NOW THIS is how all quilts ought to longarm. Totally trouble free! Well, except for one tiny red thread I decided to un-bury from under the top. Posting a lot of pictures because they came out so kool I thought & I couldn't pick between them. What the heck, I'll go totally crazy and show you the editing options I choose from on each picture. Photos by Nina, a professional photographer, are shown below. Oops, not all hers. (I hope I have it right now.) The quilt top pattern is Jelly Filled by Camille Rosekelley. The fabric is Sweet by Urban Chiks for Moda. Nina wants a meander everywhere except the red border. She wants SID around that. We changed the plan to 1/4 top stitching along the edges. Oct 29: Nina sent the above photos.
Nov 03: Quilt Arrived. I'll take better photos later. Nov 04: Posted bed photo. Nov 21: EQ7 & IQ overlays. Nov 23: Final touches on the IQ pattern Nov 24: Loaded and ready to baste. Nov 25: Basting...basted...quilting... Nov 26: Still quilting. At end of day, I am almost finished. Just need to finish the top stitching on the red border. It seemed to be the best plan to finish it all at once after the rest of the quilting was complete. Shifting the side edges back and forth took way more time than I thought but it did the trick nicely, I think. At the bottom, I had to invoke more complicated skills/tricks making the panto fit precisely outside and inside the inner border. I will do something similar to get the top stitching to fit precisely inside the red border. Nov 28: Finished the top stitching & thus the quilt. Will try for some morning pictures tomorrow. Nov 29: Final pictures. |
