Jan 22: First contact when Branna spotted Carrie Byrd's quilt. Jan 23: Talked on the phone & sent links to Superman theme fabrics. She loves the fabric featured above so I quickly composed a Just Can't Cut quilt in EQ7. Jan 25: Sold! That was easy! Doing a quote .... to see if we can do business. Fabrics I like for this quilt & a few layouts are listed. Jan 26: My fabric choices and quote have been accepted. Have until July to get everything done. Fabric is ordered. Hope they look as good in person as in my EQ7 rendition. Feb 02: Fabrics are here. May not use the stars...not happy with the match. Feb 13:Washed & pressed all the fabrics. Feb 14: Cut everything for making the top. Pinned the strips that will become the pieced blocks. Feb 16: Strip sets sewn, cut and made into blocks. Feb 17: Have my layout I want so ready to assemble the top center. Feb 18: Quilt top is finished. Mar 03: Programmed IQ ... smaller/denser this time. Will use white thread. Mar 04: Piecing the backing. Need to insert a strip of black in the center to get the length I need. Also need temporary leaders on top and bottom so I'm using the star fabric I bought and didn't want to use in the quilt. It is poor quality but perfect for leaders. (Leaders are the 3" I need to load the backing beyond what I need in the quilt.) Mar 05: Backing is ready. Loading. Hmmm, did I ask about batting? Need to before I cut & go on. Mar 06: Loaded. Testing thread. I started quilting using Bottom Line Silver. It was so hard to see, that we changed to Magnifico 2167 Cloud Cover with Bottom Line Silver bobbins. Mar 07: I have enough fabric left to quilt some pillow covers. Breanna will finish and stuff them. Mar 08: I had a nagging thought to check the back of my stitching sample. Good thing I did. The backing we chose will not hold up to quilting. Show stopper for now. Pieced the pillow covers. Ordered the new backing. Quilting the pillow covers. Mar 09: Finished the covers. Mar 10: Shipped the covers to Derek while Breanna is out of town Mar 13: New backing is here. Needs piecing. Mar 20: Pieced the backing. All set to prep & load. Apr 28: Quilting. Apr 29: Yesterday, with two rows to go, I noticed a couple of small yellowish stains on each side of the quilt. Took the time to deal with them as best I could. Apr 30: Showed Breanna the problem areas. She optioned for me to proceed without replacing the fabric. Quilted. May 22: Squared the quilt & made the binding. May 25: Attached the binding on the front. May 28: The binding, and thus the quilt, is finished. Jan 22: Quilt is here. Jan 24: Finally opened the package and posting this gorgeous quilt. My photos don't do it justice. Maddie's are better. Jan 28: Emailed for quilt details. Feb 09: Emailed again for quilt details. Feb 22: Madeline is alive! Just working very long hours. A Rose is a Rose--going to do up a rendition with this pattern on this quilt starting at 7". Wanting a medium density that won't overpower the quilt itself. My kind of fun. Mar 02: Finally getting around to working on this design. Did quilt rendition of the blocks and quilt size but no where near Madeline's artistry. Mar 4-9: Having worked on the pattern size for several days, we have a final plan. Mar 12: Started prepping process. Mar 13: Loaded, ready to baste. When prepping the top, realized we have a major problem with too much bulk in the seam intersections every 10". Have some ideas of how to deal with I need to work out with Mattie. Mar 14: We have decided to do custom blocks which will avoid the trouble spots. All planned so now just have to execute it. Quilting. First row done. Mar 15: Rows 2 - 6 done. Mar 16: Quilted. Binding is attached. Boxing it up. Hope to ship tomorrow.
Jan 04: First contact. Will be using white thread to match & a meander panto.
Jan 20: The quilt is here. The size maxes out my system. Feb 01: Changed IQ pattern from a puzzle piece meander to Stars & Loops. Feb 11: Prepping including measuring & programming. While photographing, I got to thinking ... hmmm ... those initials in the corners of the anniversary couple. "In the stars..." Hey, Valentine's day is around the corner so tis the season. Now the day is well spent & Sarah is super busy in her own world. Back to the binding for now. Feb 12: This is a fun quilt to play with. That is my only intention. Drew a rendition of this quilt in EQ7 & did some idea overlays. Feb 13: Still playing while Sarah is recuperating from her fashion show ordeal.. Added some Valentine type custom borders. What can I say? Playing is fun and free. Feb 18: Sarah is back & we have changed course a bit. Stars are out. Chantilly Lace is in for the panto for the quilt center. The simpler Heartloops will fill the borders. Feb 19: Cut & paste sketch of the plan Sarah & I discussed yesterday. Feb 24: Started prep work (backing & batting). Started polishing the quilting plan. Feb 25: Quilting plan is now programmed. Resuming prep work (top & loading). It is now 9 PM & the quilt is loaded. Not basted...but loaded. Prepping has taken many hours. Any and everything will show through a white quilt especially red & blue threads. This quilt also had a lot of tiny bits of dark what I can only call trash--don't know what it is. And long hairs. I picked these off one by one on both sides of the back and front as I pressed. I removed &/or trimmed every colored thread I saw that might show through. More dark threads will unravel as I load & roll the quilt so I will be looking for these as I go. Nothing looks worse than a dark thread quilted inside a white quilt. There will be places I can't help where dark fabric will show through at the seams & points even though Sarah did an excellent job of pressing to the dark fabrics. Basting is next. Must stop & finish Rudy's binding--needed for a show next week. Feb 28: Basted. With that, February is gone. Mar 01: Quilting day at last. Completed the top, center & bottom sections. Quilt is so large, it is very hard to photograph. Will reload and do side sections tomorrow, hopefully in time to ship. Note that I try to take pictures that show up the pattern. It is not nearly so pronounced in person. Mar 02: Working on sides. Mar 03: Quilted.
Dec 30: I used EQ7 to add a few borders this very colorful panel.
Jan 01: Rudy is helping with color selections. Jan 02: We've decided to use Kona Cotton Royal & Malibu (as used in the star quilts). The red is Kona Cotton Cardinal I have on hand. The tan flannel is a remnant from Joan's Lodge Quilt. Blue fabrics are ordered. Jan 03: Cut tan & red strips, sewed red border to panel, pieced the backing, made the binding. Jan 07: Thread: Bottom Line Silver. Batting: wool. Made a schedule. HA HA HA! No way, Jose! I mean, Rudy. Jan 08: Pre-washing & pressing fabrics. Rudy & I changed the plan...again. Jan 11: Cut borders. Jan 17: Rudy cancelled this project. Batting & panto are flexible choices. Jan 18: Dorothy took over ownership of this project. Ordered new backing. Jan 24: The new backing is here. Will use Animal Crackers panto. Since the wool batting is already cut, we will use it. Still need to pick a thread. Feb 05: Pieced most of the top. Still need to do top & bottom blue borders & piece the backing. Feb 07: Finished piecing the top & the backing. Backing needed a leader on one end. Made two bindings I will send to Dorothy--red & curry. Mar 17: Quilted.
Dec 31: Rudy bought these fabrics today & had them shipped here. We are going to use the pea pod print as a border on the front and for the backing & binding.
Jan 01: Made a slight change & ordered a tad of pink fabric with yellow stars to do it. Jan 04: Fabric is here. The striped border is pinker than shown on the website which is good. Actually the whole panel is pinker. Very nice! Jan 07: Pieced the top. Made the binding. Didn't have enough backing so ordered more fabric. Thread: So Fine! #520 Barely Peach. Batting: wool. Made a schedule. HA HA HA! No way, Jose! I mean, Rudy. Jan 12: Extra backing material is here with a nice note from the vendor. Jan 17: Rudy cancelled this project. Batting & panto are flexible choices. Jan 18: Dorothy took over ownership of this project. Only changed the pantograph. Since the wool batting is already cut, we will use it. Bobbins are wound & ready. Jan 28: Bought Baby Bunny Panto. Jan 29: Loaded. Jan 30: Quilted. Jan 05: First contact.
Jan 13: Quilt arrived. Please know that such a complex and horizontal backing cannot be monitored while quilting. It should be fine but my focus will necessarily be on the top. Jan 26: Emailed for quilt details. Jan 31: Sharon let me know she is not available...out of town care giving. Feb 24: Sharon is back home. Mar 02: Finally taking photos. Once I started, I couldn't stop. Love this quilt. Mar 03: Drew the center block of this quilt in EQ7 for overlays. The blocks are not all the same size so I will be contacting EQ7 folks for help with how to do the whole quilt. Mar 07: Sharon's back ...again. We worked on her plan today. Very close. Using Wheat Berries panto and Bottom Line Silver thread. Mar 10: Used new EQ7 skills to draw all of this quilt. Sharon needs to tell me which way is up--the direction on the bed or the direction of the drawing. Mar 11: Overlay is done. Ready to start prepping. Mar 12: Started prepping, changed thread, cut batting, set tension, pressed the backing ... stopped and spoke to Sharon. Her backing is so beautiful, I suggested she turn this one into two quilt tops. She agreed and ordered red fabric to back this quilt. There is another reason. Too much piecing on the back creates a situation where I cannot see/control what happens like I can on the top. Parallel strips like borders tend to create some waves when pieced. Most will quilt just fine but it takes some finagling. Mar 18: Backing is here. Mar 20: Pieced the backing. Prepping & loading. Quilting. Mar 23: Finished quilting. Can't ship until I hear from Sharon. Note: Never got to turn the original quilt backing into a quilt. Sharon timed out on the process while we were trying to figure out the best density for Gypsy Feathers. She asked for her quilt back unfinished. Broke my heart & probably hers too.
Jan 01: What is one more quilt among so many? LOL Rudy is going to have one colorful booth at the trade show later in January.
Jan 01: Will use the logo colors using Kona Cotton solids. Rudy will try to get his logo done elsewhere & then just lay it over the quilt center. Jan 02: Fabrics are ordered. Have solicited the help of Patricia Ritter of Urban Elementz to help with the panto. Jan 03: Auditioning fonts--will use serif font for "sharp sewing". Also getting familiar with the piecing plan. i.e.
Jan 06: Working today on turning the logo text into a pantograph. Have posted first pass. Rudy likes it so now it needs a bit of tweaking. Jan 07: Thread: Bottom Line White to match background. Batting: wool. Made a schedule. HA HA HA! No way, Jose! I mean, Rudy. Jan 08: Fabrics are here. Jan 09: All fabrics pre-washed & cut. Jan 10: Making 1/2 square triangle blocks using Strip Ruler method. Jan 11: Cut & pressed all the blocks. Ready to sew. Backing & binding are ready. This quilt is now top priority. Jan 12: Sewing blocks together. 208 square or 1/2 square triangle blocks will become 13 4x4 star blocks joined into 3 rows. Jan 13: Finished small star rows. Joining the rows & making the stars. Jan 14: Third day of piecing...Finished the center with all the stars. Now the borders. Jan 15: Finished the second border only to discover I have a major case of friendly (wavy) borders. Looking back I can see it coming... Stopped to be sure my loaner IQ was okay & to test my pattern. It could use some tweaking... Quilt top finished. Will tweak the pattern for a couple of hours. Jan 16: Re-tested my pattern. Loading and quilting. Quilted & squared. Attaching binding. Adding Wonder Clips. Shipping Express tomorrow. Monday us a postal holiday. Jan 20: Rudy received his quilt. Feb 11: Quilt back here to finish the binding. Feb 27: Bound. These topics are addressed elsewhere on this site in case you missed them.
