Still need more black handles. Jul 04: Everything is cut now and ready to sew. Jul 10: These have covered my work table for nearly a week (lots of planing work). Hoping I can start sewing this afternoon or evening. Jul 14: Finally made a start. Doing the UT bags first. Pockets are done. Jul 16: Making good progress with a lot of pin basting done. All set to start putting the parts together. Jul 17: Attached bands & top stitched them, made the outer & lining bags. Jul 18: Made & attached the handles. The bags are now in one piece. Two isn't enough ... now Pamela wants a third sling bag. May 04: Have a request for another sling bag featuring with black bears. Started looking for fabrics. Need one yard each of two fabrics. Fabric is purchased & on the way. Got the only yard of the bear paws on the internet. Whew! Fabric was here by week's end.
May 18: Cut out everything. May 24: Started sewing. May 25: Finished. A friend reminded me this morning that I promised her a Birdie Sling bag out of this Rising Sun fabric. I had forgotten.
What can I say? The fabrics are just so beautiful, I couldn't resist. Jan 24: Started one of the purple sling bags Brown Sling Bag for Joanne - 03/19/2012Mar 19: Cutting out this sling bag to make for my daughter, Joanne. I have devised a way to make plusher, sturdier straps and want to replace the one she graciously bought from me. Shhhh! It is a surprise. Pink Sling Bag - Not Made YetOne day...for someone. 1st Purple Sling Bag for Pamela - 03/13/2012Jan 24: I am making this one for my friend, Pamela. It must be chameleon fabric because every photo comes out a different color. Jan 25: Cut the batting I am using as the lining. Decided to pre-wash the fabrics since I know this friend will wash hers!! LOL This way the bag won't shrink on her & the colors should no longer bleed. Mar 13: Finished 2nd Purple Sling Bag for Joan - 03/16/2012
I am making one of these bags for an upcoming birthday present. She picked out the fabrics so it won't be a surprise. How nice of her husband!! Oct 22: Couldn't sleep so in the wee hours...fabric and batting cut and ready. Nov 06: Sewing. Finished all but the final assembly. No fusing. Minimal basting. HA! Nov 07: Got them together. Some top stitching & I am done! Broke two denim needles! Yikes. I had enough of the main fabric for two bags so I am making a more subtle one with a green handle. Could have used red but personally, I like subtle. This one was in the booth until Judy let me know how much she loves it. Now it is in Texas with her!!!
I made my sample bag in April 2010. The pattern is Amy Butler Birdie Sling. I modified it to make a shorter bag. I used the same cotton batting for interfacing that I use in my quilts and it worked great. It has certainly held up very nicely all year. I just love it! In general, I don't like to carry a bag but this one is perfect for my road trips to Greensboro.
In July 2010, I cut out the fabric I had to make 5 bags but have never gotten around to sewing them. This week is the week to get started. It is May 2011 May 21: Started cutting out and attaching the interfacing. Some have a special product for just his purpose & some have batting. It is October 2011 Oct 14: Finally sewing! Got tired of seeing that large stack of pieces sitting around forever in the way. Oct 16: Finished 4 bags & all but the last step on the last bag. Oct 17: DONE!! Oh YES!! Oct 18: Sold to Joanne, my daughter and quilt shop owner. |
