Nov 20, 2018: My friend, Narciso Gomez, is here from Florida for the family's annual Thanksgiving hiatus from all things medical. The whole Gomez family is rather fond of my quilts: the whole collection. Narci designed his ideal quilt last night using nautical flags to spell out family initials & the family shield. Also will be making a Medical Shield Wall Hanging for his office.
Nov 21: Spent the day drawing Narci's ideas..
Nov 22: Narci stopped in long enough to choose his favorite. Later I joined the family & friends for Thanksgiving dinner. I polished off the design & I have located fabrics I think will work. Just need Narci's final OK. Got it!
Nov 23: Fabrics & t-shirt are ordered.
Nov 26: T-shirt is here.
Dec 03: Fabrics are here.

Making the Quilt Top
Jan 3, 2019: Pre-washed all fabrics & all the white for 4 quilts.
Jan 05: Started cutting.
Jan 06: Finishing the cutting. Ready to start sewing.
Jan 08: Working on the flag blocks first.
Jan 08: 18 of 20 flag blocks are together. Need squaring.
Jan 09: Corrected some mistakes on yesterday's blocks while squaring. Center blocks are ready. Tomorrow will connect the blocks in the horizontal block rows with the sashing in between & start on the center.
Jan 10-17: Been sick this week.Back to quilting soon.
Jan 18: Working on center block.
Jan 21: Center block is done & the last flag blocks are done.
Jan 22: Blocks are connected into border rows & columns
Jan 23: Block borders are on. Only gold, white & blue borders left.
Jan 26: Only final blue border is left.
Jan 27: Quilt top is finished.

Longarming & Binding
Jan 28: I love working with Narci. Ask him a question at night...get a reply early in the morning. (Narci is in fact one of my favorite people but don't tell him. All of the Gomez family too.) We are going with the quilting pattern "Aqua", Warm & White batting & Bottom Line Silver thread.
Feb 01: Hmm. Binding as been ready.
Feb 02: Backing is ready. Loading.
Feb 04: Loaded ready to quilt.
Feb 05: Quilting.
Feb 06: Quilted. Squared ready for binding.
Feb 08: Binding is attached. Only hand work left.
Feb 10: Binding and thus the quilt is finished. Picture tomorrow.

Sep 13, 2015: I purchased this shop sample from Olde Forest Quilt Shoppe pieced by Paula Ginn. Fabric line is More Hearty Good Wishes by Moda. Quilt top pattern is "Take 5"--5 fabrics of equal weight in the quilt center. Just need backing, batting & time to longarm.
Sep 17: Bought backing today at Greensboro's Ye Olde Forest Quilt Shoppe.
Nov 04: I promised to finish this for someone special. She needs to select her quilting pattern.
Jan 02, 2016: Learned she has a pattern in mind but ...
Feb 22: She is still not selecting a pattern so I can only assume she is passively refusing this gift. So be it.
May 30: My friend & neighbor, Eddunio Gomez, asked for another quilt & this one is perfect. He has one quilt already with these fabrics. This one is for a grandson. He has said several times how nice his quilt is because he doesn't get too hot or too cold--just comfortable. Wish I could take credit but that is thanks to the batting.
Jun 22: Loaded ready to quilt.
Jun 23: Quilted.
Jun 24: Squared the quilt. Made & attached the binding. Clipped ready for handwork.
Jun 26: Binding is finished.

Dec 04: So beautiful! Saw it in a local quilt shop today & had to take it home.
Dec 05: Pre-washed & pieced the top and then the backing. Using some Jim Shore/Quilting Treasures fabric I have had for several years for the backing. The red from my stash is either Kona Cotton Flame Red or Kona Cotton Cardinal. The outer border is Navy Grunge by Moda.
Dec 06: Planning to use Warm & Plush batting & Bottom Line Medium Blue thread. The IQ pattern is called Tapestry. Quilted. Made the binding. Squared the quilt.
Dec 07: Attached the binding & started sewing it down.
Jan 09: Binding is finished.
Jan 11: Bought fabrics to make two more of these, one for Audrey & one for Dorothy.
Nov 23, 2017: Sold this quilt to Eddunio Gomez to give his secretary

Apr 15, 2015: Just bought this project lest I have nothing to do ... yeah, right! Okay, because I couldn't resist ... (What I get when I dare to leave the cabin & browse Sew Original, our local quilt shop.) Fortissimo by Kaufman along with some Moda Grunges and various other fabrics I hope will coordinate. Pattern is called Points & Peaks.Purchased fabrics. Drew EQ7 rendition.
Apr 16: Botched first attempt at 1/2 rectangle triangles. Did manage to start some blocks.
Apr 18: Added fabrics to EQ7 & updated the rendition.
Apr 23: Bought 1/2 rectangle ruler.
May 23: Bought backing fabric.
Aug 30: Made some progress after many mistakes. Finally have this & the tool figured out. The quilt is made with only 2 blocks. Block 1 is around the edge. Block 2 is in the center. I am glad this is a small quilt. Finished "1" blocks.
Aug 12, 2016: Resuming the piecing.
Aug 13: Piecing the Block 2's.
Aug 14: Piecing the Block 2's.
Aug 15: Blocks are done. Layout is done. Started putting rows together. On hold for now.
Aug 21: Quilt center is done.
Aug 23: First border is on.
Aug 26: Pieced the backing. Outer border is on. Quilt top is finished.
Mar 30, 2017: My good friends, Angelina & Eddie Gomez, are here this week from Florida. Today it occurred to me that this quilt is Angelina's. She selected Folk Art Flower panto which will be stunning on the navy Grunge backing. I will use a cream thread to match the background & Warm & White batting. Just need to get this quilted before Eddie & Angelina come up from Florida next time, well, actually before they leave to go back home next time.
Aug 07: Eddie & Angela got in yesterday so I want to take a break & get this done this week. I have until Saturday. Prepped & loaded ready to quilt.
Aug 08: Quilted. Squared the quilt & made the binding.
Aug 09: After attaching the binding, I will be doing the hand work until finished, hopefully tomorrow. This is a relatively small quilt (52 x 64), so it shouldn't take so very long even though I am very slow at hand binding. I have never been able to speed up the process since I only do a ladder (invisible) stitch. Been trying to talk myself into doing machine binding on this one but just can't get there. Just can't.

Planning

Mar 23: Elizabeth Perez (daughter of Eddunio Gomez) and her family stopped by announcing they wanted a quilt made for her young boys who were nearby playing quietly but energetically. When he spotted my !!!Happy Fourth of July!!! quilt & loved it as much as I do, it was settled. We would make a much smaller one. I would start searching for fabrics & she would come back to make a selection. I told her if I could find a matching jelly roll & layer cake in patriotic colors, that would make the fabric selection easy. Searched all afternoon but didn't have any success finding pre-cuts or similar fabrics. Kept finding duck cloth and seersucker. Aarghh!!
Mar 24: Elizabeth & I worked together for several hours looking online for fabric. When I noticed some of our selections were Northcott Stonehenge fabrics, I focused on those. When I searched wider, we found precut strips and a fat quarter bundle. We were set. She picked a cute backing fabric featuring pirates & we placed the orders. I had already drawn the quilt in EQ7 some months ago so we just had to pop in some of our fabrics to get an idea of how it might look. The real quilt won't be so repetitive. Now all I need is time. Oh, and I get to use Eagles On High again!
Mar 27: Pre-cuts are here. Includes a beautiful panel.
Mar 30: Pirate backing and inner border fabrics are here.
May 10: And now after a week of planning, we have a final plan for the quilt top.

Piecing

May 03: Started working on the stars. Need to make a template. First effort not so good but know now what to try next.
May 04: Working on those stars. Nasty little innocent looking little blocks. Cut the templates for the stars.
May 05-07: Continuing work on the stars. Stars & their backgrounds are cut out ready to sew.
May 08-09: Working on stripe blocks & on the sashing & cornerstones that complete the star blocks. I can't imagine doing this project with the fabric constraints without EQ7 to give me an evolving idea of the total look.
May 10: We have a plan: Q7.
May 11: Piecing the stripe blocks.
May 12: Finished the stripe blocks after planning a 2nd quilt for another day.
May 14: Piecing the star blocks.
May 14: One down, 11 to go. I have to do better than several hours on one star to make everything fit together nicely. 4 more blocks mostly complete.
May 20: After several days, the star blocks are finally done. The blocks are assembled & the inner border is on.
May 21: Quilt top is finished.
May 22: Need 1.5 more yards of backing. Ordered.
May 29: The rest of the backing fabric is here.

Quilting

Jun 21: Programmed IQ. Loading.
Jun 22: Loaded and quilting. Using Bottom Line Ivory thread. Very hard to show the quilting on such busy fabrics but I'm trying.
Jun 23: Quilted. Made the binding using the pirates fabric. It is all I have left. Ready to attach it & then start the hand work.
Jun 24: Attached binding. Ready for hand work.
Jul 09: Binding is finished.

Bold, quick & easy--my kind of piecing. BTW those are 20" squares.
I spotted these fabrics from a collection that was almost sold out.
And this is commissioned by my neighbor. Eddunio (Eddie) Gomez is the kind of guy one likes instantly. Friendly, outgoing, generous.& neighborly in all the best ways. This quilt is going in his Florida home. I built here before he did. He was gracious enough to let me park my camper on his vacant lot until I could sell it.

Aug 23: Home from Greensboro, I knew I couldn't rest until I loaded this project into EQ7. Borders can be adjusted. Outer border is also the backing.
Nov 26: My dear neighbors who live most of the year in Miami helped me get 4 packages up here today in the pre-Thanksgiving snow. While here, they asked me about a queen size quilt for their home in Florida. I showed them this one and they liked it, selecting High Seas panto to go on it. (I did a plan with the sashing red--thus Heather's comment--but the original won out. I'm glad.) I am really looking forward to making this for Eddie & Maria.
Dec 03: While the longarm is down for repairs, I started on this by pre-washing & pressing the fabrics.
Dec 04-05: Cutting & piecing the triangles.
Dec 06: Squaring the large 20" blocks.
Dec 07: Sashing. Main quilt top is together.Just need borders.
Dec 08: Took a quilting holiday.
Dec 09: Top & back are pieced & ready to quilt.
Dec 20: Loaded.
Dec 21: Quilted.
Dec 22: Made the binding.
Dec 23: Attached & clipped the binding. Ready for hand work.
Dec 24: Starting the handwork.
Dec 27: Binding finished.

This is my second Twister project. This time I am using the small Twister tool, a Birchbark Lodge charm pack, some background and sashing fabric and the pattern called "Twisting Round the Block" from the book Let's Twist...Again by Marsha Bergren for CS Designs. While in Greensboro for a few days, I just had to pick out something fun to do so most of the cutting out is already done.

May 05: Adding the borders to the 5" charm squares.
May 06-07: Cutting out the twister blocks.
May 08: Twister blocks are done. Ready for sashing.
May 11: I admit it. I hate doing sashing. For some reason my vertical sashing was puckering like a gather on my first try to add the horizontal sashing. Then there is the fun of trying to align the vertical sashing on either side of the 2" horizontal sashing. Anyway, it is done now.
May 12: Quilt top is finished.
Jun 10, 2014: Some long time ago, I loaned Kelley this quilt to use as a shop sample. It promptly got lost. Today he found it & is shipping it home.
Jul 01, 2015: Pieced the backing, i.e. kept adding fabric until I had enough to load.
Jul 31: Prepped & loaded. Using Dream Orient batting & So Fine! #452 Bone thread top & back. Rows are a 11.5 inches & quite dense due to the details in the design. With such an uneven coverage, I don't want to go too large/loose.
Aug 01: Quilting. The back will have a whole cloth effect I really like.
Aug 02: Quilted.
Aug 05: Binding is attached. Only hand work left to do.
Nov 07: Finally started the hand work.
Nov 26: Thanksgiving week. Eddunio Gomez asked for a another quilt for his cabin here because he is so pleased with his Hearty Good Wishes quilt--how breathable & comfortable it is. He selected this one.
Feb 15: Eddie is back in town from Florida so I focusing on finishing this while he is here. By the time the snow & ice outside melts enough for me to hike down to his cabin, I will be finished.
Feb 16: Bound & thus finished. Hand delivered to Eddie.
