Some people hand piece because they feel that is the way to do it. Cindy Dodd does it because she is confined to her recliner. Absolutely gorgeous. I'll longarm this & Laura Mourning will research and finish this quilt with a scalloped border attached by machine and then hand finished. Oct 16: First contact by phone--just the way I like it! LOL She decided on Deb's Swirls for her panto. I have been contracted to piece the backing and do the scalloped edge bias binding for her. I am sub-contracting the binding to Laura Mourning so I can focus on longarming.
Oct 17: Received Cindy's preview picture. WOW! I showed Cindy how these quilts are classically done with special patterns just for Double Wedding Rings. She fell in love with Donna Kleinke's Carmen's Roses for Double Wedding Ring blocks. Gone is the idea of using a pantograph. Oct 20: Quilt top arrived. Backing will come later but this baby is in the queue! Oct 22: Backing & binding are here. Nov 05: Time to get started on this beautiful quilt. Pieced the backing. Preparing the top. Everything is ready to load. And loaded. I have done just enough to know this is a doable project but it will take time. Everywhere there is stitching, I have to first carve out the area on the quilt where it will go by clicking points along the perimeter. Not hard...just takes time. I am also doing, not stitch in the ditch, but stitching just inside each side of the rings. These too have to be carved out & there is a lot of that to do. I wish I could master free hand stitching for this but I am terrible at it. (Just check my efforts to freehand baste the sides of your quilts. On second thought, don't. LOL) Nov 06: Checked the back side this morning--should have done it right away yesterday. I'm not smilin' so something needs fixin'--just not sure what is best. Hmmm. After much thinking it over, Cindy decided she would rather have white thread top and back since there is plenty of color already. Nov 07: Many hours later I finally gotten all the colored thread out. Most the pattern is double stitched and the computer slows down and makes an extra tiny stitches at the points so this was aggravating to say to the least to take out the stitches but it is done now. Will start again when I get up the nerve. Have done the first row of melons-white on white. Nov 08: Have now done first row of roses. Made it past the 1/2 way point. Nov 09: Working on the last half of the quilt. And finished. Nov 10: After a few morning photos, I shipped the quilt & binding material to Laura Mourning in SC to add a scalloped binding. Nov 14: Laura received the quilt. Nov 27: Laura reports that she is making progress on the binding though interrupted by Thanksgiving, etc. Dec 08: Laura shipped the quilt to Cindy. Dec 10: Cindy received her quilt. "The quilt arrived a few hours ago. It is absolutely beautiful!! You and Laura did a magnificent job turning my little quilt top into a beautiful work of art! I am very pleased with what you have done with it. Thank you so much!"

My word! You pieced this by HAND? I am just beside myself. The amount of time and care that must have taken! It is just beautiful!

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. It probably has more flaws than arches lol. I feel sure Linda's work is going to make the quilt stunning. This 70x85" quilt top has over 1,100 pieces and took approximately 100 hours to complete. I am not sure I will try to make this type quilt again anytime soon lol. I am anxious to see the finished product. :-)

I can only imagine! It's been such a long time since I've sewn more than a hem or a patch by hand. I did get my daughter her first sewing kit for Christmas last year, though, and from time to time we work together on the little projects that were included. To sew a 1100 piece project by hand, though... you must have been overjoyed to see it coming to a finish!

How old is your daughter? Oh, I was more than relieved to get it done. In fact, I was ready to start stapling those arch pieces together! My next projects will be simpler. I am considering doing the McCall's Garden View pattern next --but in navy instead of pink.

My daughter is seven. :) I just looked up some images of the McCall's Garden View pattern. It is quite charming. Would look very striking in navy! I'm currently working on a Christmas quilt for my boss in this pattern http://www.fatquartershop.com/store/stores_app/images/images_499/LLD-RubysRibbonBoxPDF-300.jpg and then have another one on deck that is a modification of this pattern: http://www.ellenmedlocksblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads//2010/04/BOHEMIAN-QUILT-COVER.jpg .

You gals have quite a conversation going. Not saying to do it, but if you each want to take it private, email me. With joint permission I will share your email addresses. Would never do that without a request. And definitely keep blogging!! This is here for YOU.

Hi Linda and Terrie. I certainly do not mind taking the conversation to email if you guys prefer. My email address is [email protected]. Terrie, my mom taught me how to sew around that age. I made barbie clothes. I am sure they looked like a little kid made them but I was proud. I love the Rubys Ribbon pattern. I thought about making some kiddie quilts using that pattern. I have some monkey print cloth I want to use to make my LONGARM quilted blanket. I will put the "Five Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" book with it. I also have some little princess cloth to make another LONGARM quilt. I will put a princess storybook and little girl's tiara with that one. I am looking for some cute teddy bear cowboy cloth to make a third. With that one, I will dress a teddy bear in a cowboy hat and little boy's holster with pistol. I even found a toy frog and worms to put in the little cowboy's pockets lol.

Thanks for the update. That blue sticks out like a sore thumb. I will be more careful on the next one.

LOL. It wouldn't if I turned it 180 and then re-photographed. I have a pretty good eye for that sort of thing and I did not notice it. Shall I send it back for you to redo that spot? LOL. I didn't think so. Darn, now you have my eyes going there. Beautiful shade of blue BTW.

Nooo, please do not send it back lol. It is as random as the other colors in the quilt. You have presented it well. I hope your other customers appreciate you as much as I do. You have a wonderful gift. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
